I have a '49 CJ3A with PTO winch and am in the 'inspection' phase of coming to terms with it.
The front locking hubs are VERY dirty, and I was wondering if there was a preferred way to
free them up. They are the old (?) lever type.

There's some good info on the tech page for hubs. http://www.cj3apage.com/index/Tech_Tips.htm

Thanks, They are dualmatic hubs. And the tip IS everything I need to know, except what grease to repack them with?

What ever grease you have in your grease gun is just fine.

Nice Jeep. Please post more photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Thanks Bob,
It was a Bramble find. Here in the northwest if youstop moving they will find you. It sat for 15+ years and it tookmore than a week to free it from the mass of sticky, thorny, long-legged plant life that entomed it. Fuel, oil, wd40, and pb blaster and it RUNS..... Borrowed tires, and drove it outof the field. Leaks like a sieve. No brakes, just FUN.

Aww.
I thought this was going to be about lockers.
Not locking hubs.
I need a pair of lockers..
-
That's what I thought too. I have been quietly looking for a locker center section for my rear axle. I've been told you don't really want lockers on the front and rear.
Yes, that was a nice find and it's remarkable you could drive it out of it's resting place.

I want lockers.
Front and back.
Every single jeep I have owned, has had lockers.
What good is one front and one rear wheel spinning??
I WANT 4WD.
-
You may want to rethink a front locker... ESPECIALLY with manual ross box steering... Can you say dead arms? ;D I know with my trail rig which I welded the rear, it will go anywhere. Personally, I don't think the problem is open differentials. It is about how much the suspension flexes. Once you get a wheel in the air, you're junk. That is why I built a custom frame and coil spring suspension for it and kept the stock axles. I haven't gotten it stuck because of lack of traction, only because of stupidity of operator... ::)

Oh you mean DIFF lockers........ I was wondering why anyone would want GYM lockers.....
My bad.
Thanks
