Looking into purchasing this engine from the guy with it New Jersey and was wondering what you guys can tell me from these pictures and what Pictures I should be having him send me.
Already figured out shipping and all that now just making sure it is worth my time and money to purshase. Figured and extra engine and spare parts can not hurt. :)

Here are the pictures he sent me. What I see is what I get.

Have you determined if it is a chain or gear drive engine, and if it still rotates? I see nothing obvious that looks bad...if it is cheap enough to take a chance and you trust the guy, I would say go for it.

I'm curious - what's the blue elbow and line coming out of the front part of the intake manifold? Not the PCV valve but the other thing. My manifold just has a plug there. Is it some sort of vacuum line for the wipers or ?

Not sure on the timing belt I do know it does turn over supposedly. I was wondering if any one could tell anything from the Serial number. :-?

I have been viewing these posts for a while, and seeing how my jeep is in a holding pattern i haven't motivated my self too much.......
Did get a visit from Calvin just before Xmas and thanks again "Calvin" for the visit, as to the motor in the pictures it looks like it has been steam cleaned. If the cleaning was VERY recent then it probably is alright. The other side of the coin is if it was done a while back please ask him to get 2 complete revolutions out of the motor and also ask him to pull the plugs and take a photo of them.
I have had bad experiences with steamed cleaned motors seizing up due to too much time from cleaning till getting it ready to do something with.

Serial number will be at the water pump area, top of block surface. You showed us a casting number, that same casting can be timing CHAIN or timing gear I think..., and it is probably a 2A engine. Sean over on the 2A page would be the man to ask or Bob W, as they have a better handle on casting markings than I do.
The remark about two complete revolutions is always a good idea on any used engine. 2 revolutions gets a full rotation of the cam so if any valves are stuck hard you'll find them. I like to turn it by hand and try to feel if it has any compression while I am at it.

The block casting number and the non-ribbed head indicate this engine is pre-CJ-3A.
The line on the intake manifold looks like part of the military primer system.

Hi James.
The casting number in the photo would make the engine from a Willys MB or a very early 2A. It's quite possible that it's a chain drive.
The serial # on the boss just behind the water pump or behind the oil filler tube can tell you more. See if you can get him to send you a photos of these areas.

Looks like I am going to have to pass on this one. Based on what you guys are saying I just can not take the risk with out looking at it my self.

I don't know James. If that engine was close to me, and he could show that it turns, I would be all over it. That is, if price was right. There is a lot of good stuff there. Unfortunately, NJ is a long way from CO.
If you are looking for a true 3A version, then this is not for you.

I am in Michigan, that is the biggest part of the problem seeing that with out personally being able to look at it, I am making a $400 gamble.

James, there is a guy in MI on the 2A page that just listed an engine, his thread is the wife made me do it or something like that. I asked for details but he hasn't answered yet. Right now don't even know what engine it is.

As long as it is a L134 I would be very interested.
