Title: Front main leak
Post by: CJPilot on October 15, 2012, 08:31:33 AM: I have finished a rebuild of my engine and installed it for testing in my frame. ï¿½It fired right up with good oil pressure. ï¿½My problem is the front main seal leaks a little and that was running it for a very short 2 minutes maybe. ï¿½So it will be a problem with the engine at temperature. ï¿½The crank pulley is a new repro ( it measures good). ï¿½Any ideas from those of you that are more familiar with these engines? ï¿½I was wondering if I installed the seal in backwards. ï¿½New gaskets and a seal have been ordered.

Post by: Carls_jeep on October 15, 2012, 10:26:54 AM: If it leaks now it will continue to leak. The seal lip points toward the inside of the engine. If the pulley seal surface diameter is the same as the factory spec it should seal ok.

I took a better look at my repo crankshaft pulley and found the mounting bore was tapered about .005ï¿½ and the concentricity between the mounting bore and the seal running diameter was about .005ï¿½ out.

So I took my old pulley out of the junk pile and cleaned, straightened ï¿½and painted it. Then I put it on my engine and what do you know, ï¿½no leak. ï¿½
