Title: Oil leak
Post by: NoCoWillys on June 30, 2012, 03:26:44 PM
So I was in the process of pulling my engine out of my '53 3a so I could replace the oil pan gasket since I thought I had a bad oil leak and ran into something a little more troubling.  I thought it was leaking around the pan gasket but in fact, it's clean around there.  It's leaking down around the skid plate.  OK, maybe my pan got a crack in it or rusted out.  Is this common with these pans?  :-/

Ijust ran into the same thing with a pan I was going to use. One of the spotwelds that holds the skidplate to the pan cracked . I was going to try to weld it but was told it would probably just chase the crack along so I used another pan I happened to have. There must be some way to repair it, I just didn't trust my welding. You can try brazing it but when you do heat as large an area around the weld area as possible. What you want to do is expand the metal surrounding the area of the crack so when you braze it everything can settle back to a uniform shape with as little stress as possible.

Do you have to pull the engine to pull the pan? I can't remember how it looks because my engine is out for a rebuild.

I already had the body off doing repair work. I'm also applying por15 to the entire frame so it seemed like the easiest thing to get all the access I needed to the frame plus the engine.  I'll find out more once I pull the pan.

Hey Carl,
The pan drops out nice and neat from the bottom with the motor in the frame.

NoCoWillys,
Welcome to the CJ-3A Page.  Great place for anyone operating or restoring an old CJ-3A.  I had a crack in my oil pan coming from one of the spot welds holding the skid plate to the pan.  During my restoration project I ended up with another spare parts Jeep so I had an extra pan.  It was good.

I thought it did but I wasn't sure about it.

I tried to fix the engine sump 3 times, leaking from the spot welds, once i had it off i filled it with kero and watched it slowly drip out along the bash plate, ended up getting a nos original -  put a new timing seal and gasket as well, best thing i ever did now i have no leaks at all from the engine.
