Title: Excessive smoke

When I got the jeep, the first thing I did was replace the oil line from the bottom of the filter canister to the timing cover. The previous line was plugged, according to the previous owner, it had been plugged for years and never caused a problem. Now that oil is flowing to the timing chain, the jeep smokes A LOT when warm. If I cap off that oil line, the jeep runs great - good oil pressure and there's no smoke.

Any ideas?

I'd leave it plugged, my 2 cents.  Its better to have good oil pressure and no smoke then filtered oil.  With modern oils you will never wear them out with your jeep, but you can starve your front bearing.  The timing gear will get enough oil from the nozzle, so you don't have to worry about that, and oil flow to the filter is only 10% so its not doing that much anyway.  

I'm concerned that you have another problem, I don't see that hooking up the oil line would cause it to smoke as it just drains back to case.  Take a look around and see if something else isn't hooked up wrong.  Its just a little strange.

I agree. I can't see how the two can possibly be related unless something else is hooked up wrong.

I agree that couldn't cause the engine to smoke. Out of curiosity does the oil pressure drop when the line is hooked up?

I'll have to hook it back up to check the oil pressure with it connected, though I don't think it was much different at all.

I wouldn't put it past me to hook something up wrong. I will check again. The only other change I made was the fuel pump.

A bad diaphragm in the fuel pump can pull oil from the pan and mix it with the fuel causing the engine to smoke.  I have had that happen to me on other 50's cars.

I've experienced a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump before, so I can understand that. However it runs great - no smoke at all as long as the oil line to the timing chain cover is plugged. Going to have a trusted mechanic look at it this week.

Usually a bad fuel pump diaphragm puts more gas in the oil than oil in the fuel.
