Title: 3A windshield vent
Post by: Macgraham on January 24, 2012, 01:53:10 PM
I have a CJ3A but the windshield does not have the vent. The outline is there but it is not cut out. I am planning to cut it out and use a 3A vent door, spring and handle. any suggestions?

Just fold down the windshield.  Sorry I couldn't resist.

You talked me into it, I'm tired of body work anyway.

Do you have a photo of your windshield?

It might be an M38 Windshield, just guessing

The M38 windshields have the vent panel in them but they were bolted shut with two straps over the exterior. I have a couple extra panels with handles I picked up at a swap meet. Send a PM if you need one and I'll send you a picture.

I have never seen a 3A windshield without the vent having been cut out.  I wouldn't mind have one like that.  I have never opened mine since the restoration project was completed more than three years ago.  However, I drive it only in the summer and do not have a top.  I don't need the vent.

I bet it is a repro frame.

There is another possibility, however it's very unlikely  ;)

The six pilot model M-38s did not have the center punched out.

Wow.  Now that would be one special windshield frame.  I would also like to see a photo.

Thanks Bill.

You guys are both so informative, I sometimes forget who I'm writing to.

To sum up...Thanks Bob!

Still hoping for that photo Mac!

WOW!  :o

Bob you have to tell us how you came across that little tid bit of information!  I have had your book sitting in my Walck's cart for two months........patiently waiting until I add some more parts to order.  I may have to bite the shipping bullet and just order the book alone!

That feature can be seen in period photographs of the pilot models. There is an article in the MVPA magazine Army Motors issue #126 with many great photographs. Pilot model #5 has survived and is owned by a collector. A friend and I took a 2000+ mile road trip to see MC 10005 for a couple hours. MC 10005 still has the original un-punched windshield frame.

I did read Bob's M38/Pilot article on the Siblings page.  Very informative.  Photo's are old and grainy, but I think I can make out a couple none cut vents.
