Title: Horn for a Willys? Not.
Post by: athawk11 on November 26, 2011, 09:08:56 PM
I am pretty sure the horn in my Willys doesn't belong in a Willys. It's a Sparton horn. Marked "Lo". It's pretty cool looking and it sounds great. I cleaned it up and painted it black. I looked at Ebay and discovered that it probably has a partner called "Hi". But that's all I know about it.
Does anyone know where this horn may have resided before it found my Willys?

Any guesses on its age?

By the way, it's not done, but I took the Willys for a spin today. Freakin cold here in Colorado.

Hey Tim, your restoration is looking great!  How long 'till completion?  Is it running good and how did it drive?  You just gotta be happy with how it has turned out.
No idea on the horn, sorry.

When I got my Jeep it didn't have a horn. It had been used for a hunting Jeep for the last 15 years and was removed along the way. I wanted a real sounding Jeep horn but the price was a little high and one day I was driving my Chinese tractor and hit the horn button, damn that sounds like a Jeep horn. A call to Affordable Tractor in Tx had one on the way for less than $30.

My jeep came with a "non-jeep" horn also.  I kept my eyes open and found an original one at a swap meet.  If I remember correctly, I believe I got it from Harry at Midwest Willys.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the responses. I will probably keep this horn. As mentioned, it's kind of cool looking and sounds great.

The restoration is coming along. If my wife doesn't kill me, I may have it done in a month of Saturdays and Sundays. Need to finish the wiring and electrical connections, a few small details, touch up some self inflicted scratches, stencils, seat covers, top, and I'm pretty much done. I get the feeling though that you are never completely done.

The Willys ran and handled great. It sounds very smooth. I am really pleased. A little bumbed that I have a couple small leaks. Even after I replaced nearly everything that can leak. I think I missed sealing the threads on the transfer case pan. And I am leaking at the rear main seal. ( It's new also)

Again, if anyone has a history of this type horn, I would love to know it.

Tim

Those high-low horns are out of a willys truck, possibly a Jeepster, and usually bracketed together. I have a pair as well from a swamped truck, but could only revive one of the two. They do have a nice sound.

I have a set of horns on my 53 wagon. One is Lo and the other Hi so you get the harmonic sound. They are original to the wagon. I'll take a picture of my horn set for you to  see how a double setup looks like. On my 49 CJ3A it has a flat looking horn. I pretty sure it is original since there are stress cracks in the bracket that holds the horn in place.

Nice looking rig of yours as well. My folks used to live in Grand Junction and Whitewater area. I know that winter is upon you.

Kendog, George, Thanks for the info.

So, a misplaced horn from a Jeep Wagon, Jeepster or truck.  Nice.  At least they have been found in vehicles from the Jeep family.

George, would like to see a photo if you have a chance.

Thanks again,

Tim

Our '51 packard has a set of Hi-Lo horns just like that. You should find a Hi to go with yours, sounds quite nice.
