About three years ago or so you had a discussion about RF fenders, 3As on 2As, frame changes, and how on the earlier battery supports the connecting strap from the fender to the holdown went down to the battery and on the later ones it went up to the battery. I dont have a body or fenders to see this on. I'm still trying to find if I have a 2A or 3A frame. Are there pictures anywhere of the two different battery supports? The better question for me is, is there a number of any kind somewhere on the frame that tells what part number it is and if it is a a 3 or 2A?

I'm not the Rocketeer. He is far more informed than I am on these things, but from what I have read and dealt with personally, the easiest way to tell if your frame is a 3A or a 2A is by looking at the position of the motor mount brackets welded to the frame. The 3A mounts are offset. The 2A mounts are directly in line with each other.
The 3A offset the mounts and changed the front mounting plate on the engine, all to make room for the fuel pump with the wiper vacuum function.
It's kind of hard to see this offset by just looking, so:
If the dog ear, driver side, on the front engine mount plate is pointing to the front of the jeep which is attached to the motor mount, and the motor mount is attached directly to the frame bracket (no additional offset bracket or spacer) then you have a 3A frame.
Note: The dog ear on the engine front plate, passenger side, will always point to the rear of the Jeep.

athawk11, I think you did it. Yes, the mounts are offset. Along with no gussetts on the front of the frame, I have a 3A frame. Without any kind of a body, it ws hard to tell. So I'm firm in knowing it's a '49 3A, J-80966. I'll gather all the other minor numbers from parts and start to bring him back to life. It will be a long process. I'll be asking many other questions as I go. Thanks for the help, Terry

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Got a 50th wedding anniv coming up on Friday and things are a bit hectic. athawk11 had the right info for you. 3A motor mounts along with 2A type radiator mounts does date it to early 1949 model year.

DadsJeep,
Happy to help.
There is very little that I am confident in answering on this site. Every time I think I have something figured out with the 3A I am building, I find out I am either completely wrong or at least not exactly correct.
I cannot express how important this site has become to my jeep building success. Reading the thoughts, ideas and tips from this group makes the building experience real. The jeep manuals are fine, but they offer one editors point of view. They were not written with the thought that 60 years later, people would be fighting out rusted bolts. Or modifying repro parts that don't quite fit.
Here you have hundreds of people here that have succeeded and failed on numerous tasks and those experiences just can't be expressed in a Jeep manual.
DadsJeep, best of luck on your build. Post pictures as you get things going.
Rocketeer, didn't mean to step on your direct question from DadsJeep. Nobody had answered him after quite a few reads. I had a decent answer to his question, so I threw it out there.
