Title: Diff. fluid
Post by: aboyandhisdog on July 12, 2011, 08:13:27 PM
Howdy,
What do you guys like to use in the differentials?  My manual says "MIL-L-2105B"  80 wt.  but I have no idea what I'm looking for.   Would a 75/90 wt. gear lube do the trick?  Thank you!

I prefer straight 90W gear oil but it's virtually impossible to find so 80/90W is what is recommended. Personally I'm going with 80/140W. I don't recommend that if anyone does a lot of highway driving as there is a slight concern for increased heat.

Thanks again, Larry.  Am I correct to understand that a "GL-4 is not needed as there are no "yellow" metals?

I use - LS 90 DIFF OIL GL5 - for front and rear hypoid diffs - your diffs have hypoid cut gears

For the GEAR BOX and Transfer box i use - 80W90 GL5 GEAR OIL - does not attack yellow metal (sincro rings)

My book says Trans-Gear 80 GL 4 is a 4 /5 speed gear box oil, i wouldn't use this.

So for your jeep you need 3 types of oil Engine oil - Diff oil - Gear oil - sitting in your garage all clearly marked... just like mine wasn't
