quickest way to tell if chain or gear drive cam is to look at the front of the timing cover.. If there is a rivet like thing right over the center of the cam gear, that's the clue it is chain drive. If the cover is flat, with no small round bump, it is gear drive. Can't tell you on the number.. I do know the front engine plate will need swapping over if you want to keep the M 38 fuel pump and generator setup no matter which it is.

J 232366 (if correct) is a late 1948/1949 CJ2A engine and would be gear driven.

both M38 engines & the two other spares have a "bump" where the cam center should be ...about .250 high & 1in tapering down to about 1.25 on the timing cover [no rivit] so I assume that all are gear driven...didn't want to waste time tearing the wrong one down....thanks for the help...Kent
