Title: olive drab color
Post by: brotherdavid on January 01, 2011, 02:34:35 PM
I have a 1953 cj-3a that I am restoring and am wondering where I can get the correct color olive drab paint for my seat frames, soft top hardware and fan shroud as they are now olive drab color. They are pretty nice now but still would like fresh paint on them as everything else will.

Is your Jeep painted Olive Drab all over? If so take the cover over the brake master cyl. to Wal Mart and have them scan it and copy the color you have. Be sure to get outdoor enamel. That way you can touch up or repaint as needed and have the color match.

I'm sure you realize there IS no "correct" olive drab color for a CJ-3A, as they were never factory painted that color (I know a few rare military CJ's exist, but that's not the norm)... Olive drab was used primarily by the military.

Chances are a previous owner painted it OD (as is mine) and with all the various shades of OD out there, it would be a real shot in the dark for any of us to advise you what color you have.

Carlsjeep's suggestion of getting a part matched is probably your best bet. If you want to reshoot the whole Jeep, then your options increase.

I am the 3rd owner of the jeep. the body color is woodstock green. the jeep was all original when i bought it and nothing was ever repainted. the guy i purchased it from said he got it from his uncle when he passed away. It even has the factory 3 position heater switch and it works.
I do believe the olive drab color on the fan shroud, seat frames (front and rear) and the canvas top hardware where all olive drab green from the factory.

The later CJ-3As have "olive" colored seat frames and top hardware. I think it probably was more of a glossy finish than the military olive drab.

Maybe there's a factory paint code he can use.

To date I have not found any paint color code for that. Did Willys actually manufacture those components, or did they purchase them pre-painted from an outside vendor?

Bob, you are correct. it does seem to have a semi gloss tint to it. as far as i can tell from searching the O.D. color # od 2430 seems to be the correct color as it states it was a semi gloss shade compared to the flat o.d. color of WWII era.
I have yet to locate a supplier of this shade. Just trying to make it as correct as I can.

              thanks for the input guys.

I use Army Jeep Parts "WWII SEMI-GLOSS, Late 1944 thru 1957" for 2430.
Go to http://www.armyjeepparts.com/ and click on the "GCI PAINT" tab.

Here's my seat frame in that color. The paint was fresh when the photo was taken and appears shinier than it is. It drys slightly darker (see bottom photo).
