Title: Heat riser question
Post by: RussellL on October 31, 2010, 03:10:00 PM: Can anyone post a picture of a heat riser properly set up? I am wondering if I have the spring on mine set properly. It doesn't seem to move much as the engine heats up.

Post by: Doug on October 31, 2010, 11:28:58 PM: The problem may be the spring. ï¿½ Some of the aftermarket springs (omix ada) do not react properly to heat and do not expand when warm. ï¿½ I compared a cheap repro heat reactive spring with a NOS spring and the difference was amazing. ï¿½I could put a propane torch directly on the cheap repro spring for ten minutes and it would not move any. ï¿½I could use a kitchen match and the NOS spring would expand significantly. ï¿½ If you have it set up properly and it still does not work, get another spring. ï¿½Also, make sure your flapper valve is not frozen due to corrosion. ï¿½If so, you will have to spray oil on the shaft ends and slowly work it by hand to free it up. ï¿½If it is corroded, it may take several days of penetrating oil and working the valve by hand to free it up. ï¿½

Also, when setting up the valve, the spring end goes on top of the protruding end of the z shaped bracket. As the spring expands it exerts a downward pressure which rotates the valve up and open.

Post by: RussellL on November 01, 2010, 12:55:49 AM: Thanks to everyone. That old thread and the video it links to are the perfect answer. I have my weight on wrong, facing in towards the engine and the spring needs to be above the the stop. I'll have to change the setup.
