Title: transmission tunnel cover bolts
Post by: danorte on October 25, 2010, 01:01:09 PM
During my rebuild I have never had any bolts on the floor pan where the transmission cover bolts. There are square holes, what did you use to assemble this. Speed nuts? Going to town tomorrow, would like to pick up what you all suggest. Thanks in advance. North

They were square nuts captured in a metal frame spot welded to the floor pan. You can get or make replacements that clip into a hole. You could call Walck's and see if they have something that would work.

You can buy captive nuts that fit the square holes at Lowes or Home Depot, even Ace.  Pretty common. Jim

On the old forum, there was an old thread about this very issue with pictures of the cage nuts.  Can anyone link to that old post?

I had been searching around for the same nut, though I'm only missing one. Here is the thread I had started about it on the old board: http://cj3apage.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Tech&thread=1755&page=1

Thank you all will go into town tomorrow to look for these. Perhaps a caged nut or speed nut with body type bracket will work. THanks again. North

The difficulty with the caged nuts is not in finding them but in finding enough room between the floor pan and your transmission to get your welder in there.  It will be pretty tough to weld the caged nuts in place with the body mounted over the tranny.

You can braze or silver solder them from the top of the floor board with care. Even soldering them in place may work.

They make "snap in" ones that go in from undeneith.  Try major hardware stores or a fastner wholesaler.
