Title: Anyone installed a Powergen?

Powergen alternators, they look more like generators and have the higher output of an alternator.

I think the only reason to consider one is if you MUST have a jeep that looks original. A standard alternator converted to fit the jeep would be MUCH cheaper. These are more for the old school hot rod crowd trying to build a 50's lookalike hot rod with modern electricals.

Those are really nice looking generators but really pricey too. If your converting to 12 volt, you can get your generator rewound for 12 volt ouput for alot less.

I have a twelve volt generator from a ford running now, and it just -barely- charges the system when it is running. I would like to add some Unity fog lamps to the front, and maybe an electric winch later if I don't find a PTO that trips my trigger.

Part of what makes our jeep stand out around here is the fact that it is rolling with good ol' fashioned technology that it was born with. I could flop in a alternator from the wreckers, but doesn't that seem boring? Having a "stock" vehicle seems cooler now than anything people slap together to make happen sometimes...

I was just hoping that someone would say they had one and loved it so I didn't have much to waffle about.

Generators charge better with more RPM's.

Since running these old engines at high RPM's isn't such a good thing, is there any way of changing the pulley on your 12V gen to increase it's RPM's without having to rev the motor?

I had a nice 12V gen on my old '58 Dodge, and it kept the battery topped off even at idle, when running extra lights, stereo and CB.

It worked much better than the one that came in my truck.

1/3 the weight, 10 times more dependable, 5 times the amps, and little need for high rpms.  I'll take boring.  Currently running a Premier 160 A version in the 3B that does double duty as a welder.

Still waffling, haven't really looked into a smaller pulley. Maybe it needs one, who knows what speeds it turned in its stock spot.
