Title: Spindle Attachment
Post by: Kirkski on May 09, 2015, 12:37:37 PM
I am having a serious brain fart. I cannot remember if there is anything like a gasket of some sort that goes between the spindle and the steering knuckle. I have not thrown away any parts but I don't have anything that looks like it would go there. The surfaces look way to clean to have not had something there.

Also, the bushing in the spindle seems to have some weird grooving is that normal

I have been working on rebuilding my front axle this summer. I do not think a gasket goes in there. The GSM doesn't show one at least.

Do you plan on filling your knuckle with grease?

That groove you are asking about it to suck grease into the bushing and flange face when the front axle shafts rotate. That must be an original bushing because the Omix-ADA bushings have a slightly different groove.

I agree, no gasket. Mechanically, I'd want a solid metal to metal contact. I did put a trace of RTV there though, for sealing.
There IS supposedly (I think) a gasket between the brake backing plate and spindle, but I also did not like the fact that there would be a paper gasket somewhere between the bolts holding the spindle on, so I just skimmed some RTV on the backing plate and eliminated the gasket.

This is an excellent application for Loctite 574 Flange Sealant.  The Porsche people use it to seal the crankcase haves together.  Similar to the old school shellac sealant.

Thanks I did reconstruct with no gasket! Squidtone, I used Multifake EP000 Chevron, I have a lot leftover, almost 4 gallons, only sold locally in a 5 gal or rather 35lbs.

Wow, I looked up the Multifak, I'd never heard of it. Cool stuff.
I guess I never heard of it cuz most folks would not buy a 5 gallon pail!
Looks like good stuff.
