Title: Gas Tank Mystery
Post by: Mudviper on March 05, 2018, 07:52:51 PM
It seems like the more I work on my CJ3A the more I get confused on where some of the parts on it came from and that also has to do with my gas tank. I am looking to replace the tank due to the fact it doesn't have a fuel gage sending unit on it or any hole to install one. When I was pricing out a new tank I noticed that all the tanks have the fuel line attaching to the tank next to the frame rail. The tank that is on my 3A has the fuel line attached near the edge of the body, opposite side of where it should be. There is no other holes in the tub to indicate that the tank fittings go through the tub near the frame rail...

So anyone know what tank I might need or do I need to modify the tub. The tank also has straps going from back to front holding it in.

Your floors have probably been replaced if you see no holes in the driver side floor.  The tank in your photo is not original to your 3A.

Here are a couple photos of the original style tank.  This is a reproduction purchased from Walck's.

They are pretty close to original, but the fuel connection and drain are not in the exact original position.  You can see the holes in my tub.  I had to elongate them to accommodate the new position of the fuel connection and drain.

Floors don't look like they have been replace, but that is the only explanation that makes sense. Will have to order a tank and see about fitting it in.

Maybe just a really good floor patch vs a complete floor replacement?

In the original position, the frame rail serves to protect the fuel line from damage.  I don't get crazy while wheeling my Jeeps, but I would be a little nervous having the connection where yours is currently located.

You make a very good point there. Have not taken it offroading as of yet, but was a plan in the future. Will need to address that.
