Title: Jeep hub puller...pull your rear hubs with one!!

This old tool is the best way to remove your rear brake drums without damage. It bolts to the lug studs, and presses against the axle end. Before attaching the puller, loosen but do not remove the big nut in the middle a few turns. If you remove the big nut, when the hub jumps off it might hurt you or your surroundings.

Tighten the lug bolts tight, then spin the center bolt on the puller up tight, Use an impact wrench to tighten it fully. If the hub doesn't jump off yet, put the tee bar on the center bolt and use a mini sledge to tighten it further. Give the center bolt a sharp whack if it still doesn't fall off.

Do not attempt to use a slide hammer puller or a three jaw puller to grab the drum anywhere else but the lug studs. That's how lots of drums get warped or otherwise ruined.

This applies to original style drums that are mounted to the hubs permanently by the studs, not to more modern jeeps where the drums are outboard of the hubs and they almost fall off.

This tool only has three arms on it, you can buy additional arms if you can find them, and it will work even better with all five mounted up.

You should be able to use it to pull the hub on the newer style ones, too.  You can buy them new, and they come with a hammer-wrench (or whatever it's called) that goes over that big bolt.  Hitting that with a hammer is supposed to more effective than just using an impact wrench on it.

I never did get one for mine--not after watching a mechanic wreck a less robust version trying to get the hub off.  (This was from my spare axle, probably from a CJ5--the ones on my 3A came off fairly easily.)  But he did manage to remove the axle from the housing with a slide hammer (bigger than mine) and then cut the bearing race off with a torch.  That allowed me to put the axle and hub together into my press.  It's a 20 ton press, and I was pulling pretty darned hard on the handle, when the hub finally popped off with a noise like a gunshot!

I was fortunate that an old time jeep dealer let me use his after I bought parts from him. It was some kind of a chore even with that and sounding like a gunshot is spot on. Right side was harder as 2 studs were spun off because someone didn't know about rh threads.

Here it is in action along with the later style drums Bill mentioned that go over the hub rather than behind. Makes life so much easier!

Here's the puller in a better picture, this time it is mated to its hammer crossbar..(First time the parts have seen each other in over 6 years. Do I have an organization issue?)

Looking at the pic I think the crossbar wasn't from this puller originally, as it is newer looking. The guys on Antique road show would give me hell for the patina mismatch.

those pullers do work great. after several tries with a home made puller i bought one of these from Walcks or Kaiser Willys, i dont remember which as i have bought several parts from both. the drums came off fairly easy.
