Title: Pictures of NOS parts
Post by: F Bill on February 24, 2013, 07:50:01 PM
Here's a place to see what stuff looked like when you could buy it off the counter at your friendly local Willys Parts dealer.

If any of y'all have NOS stuff and want to share the pics, please do.

I'll start with some ALA tail lights I recently lucked onto. And NO, I did not pay the $6 a light marked on the boxes..I can only wish. They are not for sale but I would trade one for a right side lamp in similar condition. Here's the box:

The green arrows point at the cast in holes for vertical stud mounting of the light on an earlier jeep. In the parts book I have this is the only light listed for ALL the universal jeeps, even though we know it was not an original light on most 2A models. (Used on some 48 2A jeeps, if I am correct..) Use started with the serial number 53678 1950 3A, see Bob W's post below.

This shows the sticker that told the end user to change the bulb if used in a 12 volt jeep. And here's the tail light from the top, you can see the ALA marking here.It is so you could read it when the light is on the jeep.

I have some more pics and will add them soon. Photobucket is being a royal pain. I miss the old Webshots.

Here's the mirror I recently picked up. The box was in a bit worse shape. Lucky the guy I bought it from didn't wait another year, as the stuff inside was already starting to rust.
And here is everything slid out of the box for the first time in 40 years or so.
The box is above the parts....

Everything all removed from the packaging, on top of the instruction sheet they had folded up to fit the small envelope seen here.

Closer shots of the mirror itself. (http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag3/FBilljeeps/NOS%20Jeep%20and%20Willys%20parts/DSCN1498_zpsda44fb59.jpg)

In the last shot you can see how the screw attaching the mirror to the bracket is already rusting. Outside storage of parts boxes isn't good. Also, it was interesting to see just how much dust was in the factory paint on the mirror.
Our restorations are actually to a quality level better than stock in this case..Speaking of which, those in the know, is this a correct mirror for a 3A as supplied from the factory?? It is the correct part number, but it is what they supplied in 1960 or so. It also was supposed to fit the Dj3A and Cj5.

Next up, a speedometer.

I have a NOS YF carb. No pics of it though. Box is still very nice.

It is a very common misconception that the ALA tail lights were used on later CJ-2As, when they actually used NACOs. Early CJ-3As also used NACO lights but the mounting studs were horizontal. The CJ-2A/ALA misconception probably comes from a small error made by the author of the tail light article on The CJ-3B Page. A detailed inspection of the Parts Lists and Service Bulletin 50-40, dated November 16, 1950 will confirm this. The service bulletin states "Tail Lamps - to prevent rusting, a change has been made from a steel stamping to a zinc die casting for the tail and stop lamp assemblies. Effective with Model CJ-3A, Serial No. 53768". A breakdown of part numbers can be seen here... http://www.cj3a.info/tech/taillight.html

Very cool parts you have there Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That looks like the optional CJ-3A rear view mirror. Can you take a better photo (or scan) of the instructions?

Thanks,

Trivia question. What is the third hole in the mirror mounting bracket for?

Trivia question. What is the third hole in the mirror mounting bracket for?

Was that a hole for a rubber bumper of some sort to keep it vibration free? Or are rumors that it was part of the hyperspace aiming provision for intergalactic travel actually true?
Or was it for (insert correct option here)
BTW that is the light I needed a lens for and a bezel.. Only got one with the pair. And my other source fizzled out.

Here's what you could have bought a new speedometer for back in the day...

And this is the part number you would need to get it..

And here it is:

And the date code on the case says 1959. According to my parts list it is the correct replacement for the 2A and 3A.

I don't know if you can tell, but the nuts on the back are not wingnuts, but ordinary hex nuts.  :-/

Tim

Tim there was a guy on the G 503 board who was selling some parts and I gave him a call. I probably have 5 or 6 hours on the phone into those parts and wayyy too much money. I didn't think I was going to have another chance to do it so I pulled the trigger and sent him a check. He was cleaning out an old junkyard and does this sort of thing for a living!

I did the same thing.  He's a nice guy, but disorganized.  Can't seem to get prices out of him or a solid idea of what he has left.  I'm glad you got the ALA lights.  That was on my hit list as well.

Not sure if this counts as it is not an official "JEEP" part. Moderator, feel free to delete if need be. NOS Trico SF 616.

I was more excited about finding these envelopes this week than the hodge podge of stuff inside them. No real money here but they will look great hanging on the wall.

Isn't that nice!

Is there a special plug that fastens to the back and hooks it to the harness?

Yes but this plug is MIA. Got one lying around you want to give me?

I'm surprised that no one is making those tail light socket connectors yet. You can get the G503 style but they don't fit the ALA/NACO CJ lights.

Does it use two offset pins like the bulbs use?

Maybe you could make one with an old bulb base.....

I made one for my CJ-3A. Trouble is I don't remember what I did. Must be CRS setting in. What were we talking about now???

Really I think I modified one of the G503 connectors.

I just checked an old beat-up ALA that I had in the spare parts bin. Lo and behold it still had the connector:
