Title: Spare Tire
Post by: Ryan_M on May 07, 2013, 09:35:17 PM
I finally installed my spare tire carrier and vibration dampener today. I had gone back and forth whether I wanted to put it on the tailgate or its original location but I kept coming back to "keep it stock".

It took couple frosty brews to build up enough courage to bore a bunch of holes through the side of the tub but miraculously all of them ended up in the right places. The spare, I believe, is an original Goodyear tire. It was dark outside by the time I finished so here's a crummy garage shot:

Ah crap! Sorry, I forgot to get you those dimensions. Do you still need them?

No big deal. I used my precise eyeball measuring method and lucked out.

You need before and after pics of the spare tire bracket.  You did a nice job straightening that mess out.

It was a mess but I can't take credit for the repair. I was unable to even budge the bent metal. I ended up taking it up the road to a guy with a hotter torch and a bigger hammer.

I still chuckle trying to picture the circumstances of whenever it was that someone clipped the spare tire on a large, unmovable object, peeling it and the rear quarter panel off like the lid from a sardine can. Just calmly driving along and then "BAM!!!!". From the looks of it I bet at least one of the front wheels even left the ground.;D ;D ;D

Hey Ryan,
3questions:
What size tires are you running
Where did you get your seat covers
Is tha a CJ3A standard rear seat

The rear seat look like exactly like my 53 wagon rear seat!
Thanks,
George

1. Tires are 6.0 x 16
2. Seat covers came from Beachwood Canvas. I'm thrilled with them.
3. I believe the rear seat is an original 3A seat. I think there were at least two different styles of rear seats for the 3A. I bought mine on ebay. It came with the original springs and original gray cover intact.

Looks real good Ryan.

That does appear to be an original tire.  It has the pencil points that seem to be coveted by many at the 2A page.

I have a couple Willys projects going.  I dread putting the spare where it belongs, but am inclined to.  Both of these projects show 'Strike' damage at the spare tire mount.  In fact, so does the donor tub I'm working with.

Again, thing looks great! 8-)

I spoke with the PO just this afternoon, and he claims that the damage was done BEFORE he acquired the Jeep.  This can only mean one thing:  my brother did it.   :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :
