I know that they can break, but has anybody ever wore out a Rem 870?  I think my old raggedy 30 year old express shoots better now after years of dove and duck hunting then it ever, it just gets smoother (and uglier) after every season.

the mossberg 500 is a good little gun too, but just hard to beat an 870

I have an 870 that was made in the early 1950's. It's 20 gauge open choke and a wonderful rabbit gun. I shot it some in skeet and field clays and it would beat my shoulder to death. It needs a recoil absorber for field clays.

The 870s are great firearms! My Ithaca 37 is the same way, it just keeps getting better with age!

I think I may have actually wore one out, the rails that connect the slide to the bolt were worn so thin that they were like knife blades.  Darn thing shot great and never missed a beat.  I really liked that gun, sold it and bought another. ;D ;D ;D

I have had to dress up my slides to keep them from being sharp, but the only time I really noticed them being that way was when I cleaned it

I have a Ithaca model 37 and will never part with it. Bought it in 1972 at Sears. I like the 870 but it seems everyone had one and I liked the bottom ejection and the lighter weight. Mossberg 500 is probably best gun for the money. All good ones.

I would rank an 870 as one of the classic american firearms..........ALMOST up there with the 1911 platform.  With the amount of gauges, barrels and aftermarket parts it can be configured to do about anything.  I have a friend that treats his 870 horrible......drops it in the mud, leaves it in the back of his truck, NEVER cleans it and lets is rust almost solid.  When he is ready to use it for turkey season he swabs the barrel, squirts some Rem Oil in it and ratchets the slide 5-10 times.  Thats it.  It always amazes me the abuse it can take and still go boom.

For me, my favorite shotgun would be a tie between my 870 and my Browning BPS...both in 12 gauge.  I have an 1100, but I've never really liked it as much as my pumps...
