Title: CJ-3B 57348 69050
Post by: Zach S on May 03, 2019, 10:25:02 AM
Hey folks!

A little over 2 years ago I was cruising eWillys and came across a craigslist ad for a 1960 CJ-3B 1http://www.ewillys.com/2017/06/05/1960-cj-3b-boone-nc-2000/ (http://1http://www.ewillys.com/2017/06/05/1960-cj-3b-boone-nc-2000/). Turns out, the dude who owned it works at the same place I work at and it quickly followed me to my buddy's farm where it spent a few months while I got it running.

It had a pretty bad habit of flooding the solex (I'll get back to this later) that was on it, so I put a fuel regulator on it seemed to help out. I also had to rebuild the brakes, the wheel cylinders were trashed and nothing worked.

In mid-september I drove it home for the first time, it was also the first time I've ever driven a stick. Here's a video of me making my way through Valle Crucis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJm8Lq7E9Rk. I also discovered that it had absolutely no power at all. I promptly got it stuck trying to climb my hill.

I managed to drag it up the hill and started working on stuff. First off, one of the leafs in the front drivers side leaf springs was broken, so that was fixed.

Then, I decided to rewire it and built a switch/relay box for everything.

I drove it around for a bit, but it still lacked power.

I managed to make it to a local brewery for a car meet-up and struggled on all of the hills. So, it lived there for a few weeks until I towed it back to the farm.

During the time it was at the farm, I made an effort to find a place to work on it. I ended up finding a garage about 2 miles from my house that is an amazing place. I drove the Jeep from the farm to the shop (about 5 miles) and it was awful. It had no power climbing hills and it really felt like something was really wrong.

A few months before I got it back home, I picked up a carb and mechanical fuel pump from Old Jeep Carbs, and it ran so much better. Rick is the man with carbs. It ran so much better but still felt like something was wrong with the engine.

I decided to change the oil in the transmission and transfer case, and you'll never guess what it was full of. Water. Great. When I had the jeep parked at the brewery we had a lot of flooding here and I'm pretty sure that's where the water came from. My buddy and I proceeded to pull the engine out of the jeep and rebuild everything.

All of the bearings in the transfer case were seized and rusty, so that got rebuilt.

I also replaced the u-joints. The needle bearings were all rusted.

Then, we pulled apart the engine and found this nice crack someone farmer fixed back in the day.

And this nice bend in the frame near the transmission crossmember. No wonder the engine mounting plate is bent and the crossmember was crushed.

We had to cut the old crossmember out with a sawzall just to get the everything out.

So, in the middle of all that, we pulled the engine apart and found that the bolt for the cam gear was stripped out and the cam gear was just sitting there.

This weekend is engine weekend, so we're dealing with all of this now.

On a lighter note, about 2 weeks ago I saw an ad on the facebook marketplace a dude close to me posted about parting out an old forest ranger CJ-3A. I took a quick trip down the mountain and picked up a 50's Sears Aluminum Deluxe hard top and a new fender to replace my rusted out one.

That's my next project.

I just finished packing the front wheel bearings and welding the holes in the (drained really well) gas tank so no more fuel leaks. We also changed the valve springs and cleaned up the valves.

That's pretty much where I'm at. I'm looking at picking up another engine in the next few weeks and I think we're just going to put the one I have back together so I can drive this thing. It's ridiculously nice here and I'm only 5 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. I really want to take this thing for a drive.

I almost forgot, last weekend we pulled the covers on the differentials and they looked great inside. One of the first things to look good on this thing.

Then filled them with 90 weight mineral oil from Tractor Supply (https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/traveller-ford-tractor-all-mineral-90-transmission-fluid-2-gal).

Just incase anyone is rebuilding a Spicer 18H PTO selector, here's the bearings and seals I used.

The poppet balls and springs are the same ones for the transfer case and transmission. I picked those up from Walcks.

Hey folks! Thanks for the encouragement, i'm slowly plugging along with the jeep.

So, this weekend hasn't really gone as I planned. I also don't have many pictures. Thursday evening I took the hubs apart, cleaned all of the old grease out of the wheel bearings and repacked everything with Lucas's Red "N" Tacky grease. The left side looked good, the old grease in it needed to be changed, but that's why I was there. The right side was more of a mess. There weren't any gaskets between the parts of the locking hub (Warn Lock-O-Matic M3B hubs) and the grease wasn't looking great inside of that one. Also, the bearings were different than the left side.

Then Friday night, after having a few post-work pints at the red bird, I threw the right side hub in my gallon of carburetor cleaner. I don't know why I forgot there were rubber o-rings in the selector part of the hub, but I did. So, I'm on the hunt for a 2.3in and 1.12in ID o-rings for the hub. If anyone can point me in the right direction to source some of those, that would be great.

On a lighter note, I spent yesterday hanging out with some friends down in Nebo, NC at Fonta Flora brewery and we brewed 50bbls of wild fermented Kvass. It should take a few months to ferment, hopefully we'll end up with a 3.5% to 5% beer. I also got to hang out and talk about sauerkraut and lacto fermentation with a bunch of beer nerds. It turned out decent.

Hey folks! It's been a bit since I've posted any updates on the old 3B project, I figure it's time for an update! I've made a ton of progress since the beginning of the month.

First off, I've decided that it's engine month and it's time to deal with everything. We started off by flattening out the farmer fix for the crack block, then honed the cylinders and installed the pistons with new rings.

It doesn't look great, but it's flat and I'm pretty sure I found another engine I'm going to swap into this thing at some point.

Next, I took the bent engine mounting plate to the machine shop and had them fix the bends and started building the front of the engine.

This is about when I discovered that my camshaft bolt was totally stripped out and it was time I learned how to use a helicoil. For my first time dealing with stripped bolts in a cam, i'd say it didn't turn out too bad.

I got the timing gear cover on, rod ends torqued and the oil pan on. I'm pretty sure I screwed up putting the oil pan gasket on, but that's okay. I'll deal with that later.

Then, I finally got the engine off of the stand and started working on the flywheel side of things. That's when I discovered that I have an International Harvester flywheel on it. Awesome.

Got the clutch and pressure plate on and everything torqued down.

By Tuesday of this week I was ready make a big step and join the gears to the engine and I realized I've lost my throwout bearing return spring. I know I ordered one from Walcks a few months ago and it just disappeared in the disorganized shop. I'm going to dig through the shop tomorrow morning and see if I have any luck finding it. I ordered another one and it should be here soonish.

I've got a few more things to do while I wait for the part, this weekend I'm going to fabracobble together an alternator mount and do some wiring. There's a cars and coffee next weekend that I'm going to try to get the jeep to. I'm optimistic.

Hey folks! It's been a few days since I've updated this thread, I've been waiting for the form upgrade to happen and it's been crazy busy at work. I have accomplished a lot this month and last night we finally got the engine in.

About 2 weeks ago I finally got the throwout bearing return spring I managed to loose and my buddy came by the shop and we joined the gears to the engine:

It was something I've never done, and an awesome learning experience.

Last night we installed the engine. It took about an hour (and a beer each) to get everything lined up and sorted out. We struggled to get everything aligned because one of the previous owners bent the frame and all that fun stuff. But, I had a few extra bottle jacks and ratchet straps. Eventually we got everything sorted out.

I've got to do a bit of traveling this weekend, so it looks like next week I'll get the head on it, finish the wiring and put the front end of the Jeep back together.

So things kind of took a quick turn south earlier this week. We were trying to helicoil the stripped out hole under the carb and when we started cutting the threads, this chunk just broke off. It looks like when the previous owner brazed the chunk back on, they didn't do a good job. It also looks like they shoved a bunch of rtv in it and that's what kept the head on.

So, new plan. I'm going to pick up another engine tomorrow and go from there.

Hey folks! It's been a big week at the shop, I haven't accomplished as much as I'd hoped, but I'm making progress on the new-to-me engine.

Last Saturday morning I got it out of the truck, onto the engine stand and started taking it apart.

After pulling the head off of it, I was greeted with that. I guess the engine is stuck for a reason. Apart from the cylinder with water in it, the block looks great. The crank looked way better than the crank on the other engine and all of the accessories were in good shape. The pistons are also standard size, so now the plan right now is just to swap all of the internals from the broken block to the new one and go for it.

So, after a few beers and discussing ways we can go about dealign with that one bad cylinder, we decided to keep the tradition of farmer fixes going and just hone out the cylinder and see how much oil it burns. We only have about 2 more months of good weather before it gets cold and I'd like to drive this thing at least once this year.

This weekend's plans include pulling the old engine, taking that apart and swapping a bunch of parts around.

Okay folks! It's been a big weekend for the 3B. Here's a quick rundown of what happened.

First, the engine is back together, sealed up and the gears are joined to the engine. Everything spins nicely and the clutch seems to work. I've finished building the alternator bracket and that's all setup.

Second, the engine is back in the jeep. The head is torqued and the oil system is installed. I filled the crankcase full of oil before I left the shop last night and hopefully it is still holding it. I'm waiting on a PTO cover from Walcks and a gasket, so the gears should have oil in them as soon as that happens.

We did manage to crush a brake line that one of the previous owners routed in when they replaced the brake system. We'll have to deal with that if it leaks and replacing all of the old lines is one of my winter projects.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to try to turn it over tonight and make sure the oil system isn't leaking that much. Maybe start it up later in the week and drive around a bit. I still have a bit of welding to do on the body to fix a few things before we can get it on the road.

I'm so close to driving this thing.

Fellas, I have more good news, the engine runs! After finding a new battery, about 10 minutes of fooling around with the accelerator linkage and mixing up the plug wires for #2 and #3, it fired right up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaoFDwTVfiQ

I still have a pretty long list of things todo before we drive this Thursday. I have to fix the grill, setup the cooling system, run the fuel lines, put the seats in and a few other random things that I need to take care of.

I've made a lot more progress, last night I fixed the grill, got the cooling system put together and filled it with distilled water. I managed to find a few leaks and fix them and get the jeep up to operating temperature for about 30 minutes. It stayed at 160F, but idles really high.

I should get the rest of the body work done tonight, wiring in the lights, put the drive shafts on it and drive it tomorrow.

Fellas! I had a big weekend. I took Friday off to finish up some wiring and get the body back together, then I figured out that the spring in the hand brake drum decided to pop off at some point during the installation and had to deal with that.

We took it for it's first drive on a major highway Saturday night, it was so much fun. Then Sunday morning I took it for a 10 mile drive around town at around 9am. It was so much fun.

I do have a few problems, the brakes need work and the transmission leaks from the shifter tower. I'm going to make a new gasket for the shifter tower and see if that helps any. I'll adjust the brakes tomorrow night and try to get it out on the road again.

Hey folks! I meant to post this week with some updates, but it's been a crazy week at work and everywhere. I did go to the Southeast Willys Get Together last weekend which was amazing, I'll post some pictures soon, and I ordered a bunch of new parts for my ignition.

I did find a few cool things at the Get Together last weekend. I've been on the hunt for a skid plate, wiper motor and radiator shroud (that didn't fit) for a while now. Found them, I also picked up a few steering boxes and a really cool Beebe Brothers hand crank winch. The winch is soaking in Evaporust right now and I'm going to do a full restoration on it.

We also decided that it was time to get the old random orbital sander out and get that ugly red primer off of the Jeep and figure out what is under it.

We did find a lot of bondo, but also, what I believe to be the original blue paint. The Orange was added later, but it is super thick and I really like it.

I'm planning on painting it with some boiled linseed oil this weekend and keeping the patina look. Or, I might just rattle can it.

Hey folks! So, this weekend was really fun. I started off by taking a drive up to Valle Crucis, I had planned on taking some back roads and avoiding highways, but I ended up missing my turn and did a bit of highway driving.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4655UZCliFs

The jeep handled perfectly until I broke the steering damper mount. You can hear the bug clunk at around 27 minutes in.

I also spent yesterday finishing up the headlight wiring, I put 2 relays in, wired it all and it seems to work like it should.

Hey fellas! It's been a little while since I've gotten any work done on the 3B, it's the start of our cold season and it's been in the 20's every morning.

I did make it out to the shop to do a few things this weekend. Last week I ordered a new exhaust down pipe to replace the old one that had a quarter size hole in it and welded it into the exhaust Saturday morning. It sounds so much better and it seems to have fixed the miss it was having.

I also got a new steering damper, but I'm waiting on the temperature to warm up a bit so I can paint the brackets.

Hey fellas! I know it's been a while, but I have a few updates on the 3B! It's been a crazy few months, the weather is unseasonably warm, I took my first vacation in a few years and I'm about 2 weeks into a new job.

First off, I'm about 90% done with the Beebe Brothers winch. I need a few lock rings and I need to make a crank for it.

I can't wait to get it mounted on the front of the 3B.

I also installed a new steering damper to replace the one I broke (or thought I broke) a few months ago.

I also picked up a gear set a few months ago that I decided to start cleaning up.

The gears are really pitted inside the transfer case, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I may just clean it up and sell it.

Hey folks! It seems like winter has finally arrived in Western North Carolina and I keep running across new projects. I took a trip down to Johnson City last weekend and picked up a L-head and gear-set that's in pretty rough shape.

It's been so cold outside I haven't been able to motivate myself to get it out of the truck, so it's living there until the temperature gets up above freezing.

I have a '44 MB that I've been collecting parts for and I think the engine and a decent gear-set are the last items I need for it. I'm also thinking about swapping the F-head that's in the 3B currently for this engine, it's developed a knock near the rear of the engine so we'll see.

Hey folks! It's been a while since I've posted any updates on the 3B, I've been busy at work and then COVID hit. Good fun. I finally got away from life last weekend and spent some time with the jeep.

I had originally planned to take it out Saturday morning for drive up 421 to Old 421 and through Zionville, Cove Creek and Valle Crucis. It was going to be a nice drive, but the ignition coil had different plans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HloFqp8CFiA

I had a bit of good luck, it completely failed about 1/10 of a mile from the shop. I managed to get it back to the shop and had to spend 20 minutes in the local autoplace (napa didn't have one in stock) explaining to a kid what an old style ignition coil is. It runs so much better now, it's miss has cleared up and I don't have to use the choke as much when firing it up. It's a different engine, I'm happy.

I also changed around some of the wiring, I'm getting ready to put a horn in it and sort that out.

I've decided to spend a few hours with it each night this week, tonight is going to be maintenance and cleaning night.

Man that had to be disappointing :D I was all excited to watch the dash cam footage. I subscribed to your channel just in case anything else gets posted. It looks like you are in a nice area.

I recently installed a gopro "dash mount", similar to your placement, but I need to get my reliability up quite a bit more before I feel good about going on any adventures.

I've been debating buying one of those little electric folding scooters from BestBuy and keeping it strapped down in the bed just in case I get stranded several miles from home. I wonder if one would fit in the toolbox...

It looks like our jeeps are in similar condition, so that's inspiring to me. I see quite a lot of already fully restored rides around the web, or people who are doing the bottom up restoration all in one shot. I decided I wanted to keep things usable as much as possible.

Anyway, I hope to see more dash footage from your adventures if you make any.

Thanks for sharing. I am quite new here so first time I see your posts. You are doing a nice job with your jeep and mostly having a lot of fun! I decided to do a full frame off restoration at once so I haven't driven my jeep for four years now.

With your last video I felt very much represented. There were so many times that I had planned a nice drive on the jeep and just few minutes later....pufff! She decided not to move any longer. It is frustrating but also the rule of the game with this hobby!.

Keep sharing with us your story!
Regards,

Thanks for the comments everyone! Jeeps are an adventure.

With that being said, on to this morning's adventure. I attempted to take the 3B out for a drive and it had the same problems it had last Saturday. As soon as the engine started to go under load, it couldn't do it. At least I made it back to the shop again, also, I'm glad I've got the gopro mounted to the window.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMcfzkX7dbI

It was warmed up, the temp was sitting at around 150ish and had been running for about 15 minutes before I tried to take it out. I did managed to back it out of the shop and turn it around, I didn't have any issues then. About 1:34 in, it started making a new noise, almost like something squeaking inside the engine. You can hear it when I start rolling backwards. I'm not sure if I spun a bearing or something like that. It also sounds really weird when I revved it near the end. The carb and fuel pump seem to be fine, it's got fuel in the float bowl, the accelerator pump also squirts like it should. It does have new gas in it, I put about 5 gallons in it last Saturday.

So, my plan for later today and tomorrow is to replace the condenser. I've already replaced the coil and that kind of helped. I'm also going to change the oil, it smells like gas, so I'm pretty sure I've been flooding it. Maybe I'll go for a drive tomorrow, who knows!

It's been a long day in the shop, but we've sorted out the ignition issues! We started by replacing the points and condenser, which didn't really help that much. Then we decided to take a look at the spark plugs. 1 & 4 were fouled and not firing, so all 4 were replaced and it's better than it was.

I also took the chance to do a quicky oil change, the old stuff smelled like gas.

If the weather is nice tomorrow, I'll take it out.

Zach,
IF your oil smells like gas, suspect the fuel pump.  Now that you've changed the oil, drive and then repeat the sniff test (on the dip stick)  If you can keep it running a check afterwards could show the oil level will be higher and consistency will be thinner - with the smell).  If that is your case, the diaphragm may have sprung a leak and the pump is dumping fuel into your oil pan.

I will also add that it's real nice you have a quiet road to test on!  Pull out of my neighborhood and you better be going!  I've used my starter to push before too.

It never hurts to check things twice.  IF you fouled out two plugs, check them again.  Your wires may be at fault.

Hey folks! I had a big weekend. First off, got the electrical problems sorted out. I ended up taking a little wire wheel on the end of my dermal and cleaning all of the crud out of the connections. That sorted out the random miss and all of the other problems I've had with the jeep so far.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87GNPgIKrxU

Sunday morning was so much fun, I did encounter another problem. The front brakes decided to lock up after about 20 miles, they got so hot that I once I parked the jeep in Cove Creek, it wouldn't roll anymore. I managed to get it home (I wish I filmed this part, it was epic) and took the front brakes apart. The grease wasn't burnt, but the hub seal had somewhat melted. The bearings looked good and everything else was fine inside the hubs. I'm going to put things back together and readjust the brakes. I'm sure I had them too tight after the last time I adjusted them.

Rus, I'm going to check the oil when I swing by the shop this afternoon and see if there's any gas smell to it. I'll keep ya updated.

Check to be sure the master cylinder push rod is not adjusted too tight. There should be a small amount of end play when the pedal is released. Also check for a restricted brake hose to the front axle.

Great ride video! Keep them coming.

Do you worry at all about breaking down far from home? Whats your plan B?

I captured a windshield video on Sunday afternoon, I'll get it posted tomorrow. Some part of my gearing is obnoxiously loud though so its not that enjoyable yet. I might end up doing a tcase rebuild soon. Plus I have more fluid leaks than I like.

Yea nice video ride, and authenticated by the driver's reflection.  As a South Florida city slicker, I wish I could smell the fresh air along with the views.  Thanks for sharing.  A question of a Plan B was asked.  Mine is a "2X2 tube with trailer Ball latch" Tow Bar tucked in the inside of my frame that if needed I can slip it into the "front receiver" that I use for a "bike rack" (or whatever you may want like maybe a winch)  and then anybody with a 1-7/8" hitch ball and 'willing to give me a tow' is quick and easy.  No chain or rope for slack issues, just a straight bar between the two vehicles.  I also have Eye Bolts on the backing plates for springs to "center the wheels", and turnbuckles to "limit" the side track, to secure the front steering, and then I can tow it myself without front wheel lock up to the side and drag, when I hit a bump or turn.  I learned about that problem with a "light vehicle in tow" when I was bringing it home after purchase with a 3 point "U-Haul bolt-on Tow Bar".  So far I have used my setup twice to take the Jeep to a shop 18 miles away and back with no issues in crazy Floridian US-1 drivers.  Just my idea for a Plan B.

re: Plan B, I was thinking about putting a receiver on the back bumper for a bike rack :D And putting tow-bar mounts on the new front bumper. Ride the bike home, get the daily driver, and go out to retrieve.

I bring my wife and 16mo for short Sunday rides but I'm not venturing more than 5 miles out in case something breaks. But if I can stick both of our bikes on the back we will be in good shape. My bike has a kid-seat on it already so instant emergency escape-pods with a bit of unplanned cardio. :D

Also check for a restricted brake hose to the front axle.

Oh, there is a restriction. We crushed part of the front brake line when we put the engine back in the jeep.

I thought I'd posted a comment but I'll add a paraphrased duplicate.

Epic ride along!  I really enjoyed it!

When you described the front brakes locking the first thing I went to is wheel cylinders.  Then I thought of moisture in the lines expanding from all that velocity and tire barking......

A blocked line could very much be a factor.

Very nice landscape for jeep riding!  How fast did you get up to while cruising?

My plan B is still in the works, but I'm hoping to have my flat bed configured with a winch for retrieval.  That would still require a phone call to beg for a ride back home to get it.  The bike idea is what I did in college; threw the bike in the back and peddled around campus until time to go home - it was there but never needed.

With those nice drives you will quickly gain confidence and enjoy her double. I hope I am soon at that stage too.
Keep sharing!

That is awesome that you have a new/used F-head. I'm currently working on a 58058.
