Just wanted to post my new project a 1949 CJ-3A. It is in really good shape and just needs a little TLC. The goal of the project is to get it reliably running by this spring and worry about any cosmetics later. First project is rebuild the Carter WO carb, fuel pump, and brakes. It has spent most of its life in the Midwest and has been in the family since new. My Aunt and Uncle were SO gracious to let me be the next caretaker of this piece of history. It took a 1000 mile journey from Illinois to Colorado during a -15' cold snap, that was an adventure in itself. Hope you enjoy the build.

Nice looking Jeep!
Welcome -
-
That IS a nice looking jeep! Did you find it in Colorado? Are you sure it's a 3A and not a 2A? I only mention it because of the windshield frame. Welcome to the 3A page, Dan.
-
It is an early CJ-3A with some CJ-2A parts. The windscreen and the Diffs are from a 2A, not sure about the rest. I ordered a puller for the brake drums and got them off today for inspection. The drums and pads are almost new. I ordered a rebuild kit for just the cylinders. The carb is all apart and just needs a cleaning. Next I will have to turn a box of parts back into a working carb!

What a great looking jeep! Lots of adventures ahead....
On the cj3apage home page there is a section for tech tips and specs. This is a link to some carb info.

I rebuilt my carb but I had the advantage of also being the one who took it apart!
Scoutpilot, who posts here, knows everything there is to know about Carter carbs and no doubt can help you if you get in a bind.
Keep us posted...

Looks like a really nice Willys. When I first saw it, I thought it was a 2A. The grill is an early 2A. And it also looks like it has a 2A frame.
Early 3As have the same axles as the 2A. Dana 41 rear and the Dana 25 front.
Can you post a few more photos? Driver seat frame. A shot of the dash board area. An inside the cargo area of a rear wheel well. And maybe a shot of the frame horns where they attach to the front bumper.

Parts Cleaning
-
Clean!
-
You know, behind those plugs are passages that may not be clean...
-
Are those passageway rivets easy to reinstall. To remove them do you just drill them out?
-
Shot of the Master Brake Cylinder, it will get a rebuild. Does it look stock??
-
Looks like the master cylinder has already been replaced at some time. Personally I wouldn't bother rebuilding anything but an original master cylinder, just replace it.
-
A brown box showed up today! I pulled a late nighter and finished the fuel pump and carb. Now for the big test on the engine.
-
Doing some fluid changes today. The diff looks in good shape, just needs a wash. Any tips on cleaning out the diff? The pinion has a pretty good groove in it so I will re-sleeve it.
-
Looks good. I need to be frank with you though. I don't see a single piece of your Willys that would suggest it's a 3A. Perhaps it's a late 2A that was sold in 1949. Vehicles were sometimes titled in the year they were sold verses the year they were built. Do you have the serial number?
-
Athawk11 you are correct. When checking out the data plate for the title it is hard to see but indeed a 2A.
Not quite sure why my pics gets flipped around??
-
The yokes are off for re-sleeving and it looks like ill need new front brakes. Im thinking of converting the front to 11 inch drums and putting a 1 inch cylinder on the back 9 inch drum. Thought?
-
Rut Ro, coolant in the intake manifold. Head Gasket?? Cracked knuckle.
Also, is the oil filter suppose to be that small? I replaced it and the new one is smaller than the old one.
-
The water pump was leaking a little. Rebuild or Replace?? I was able to get all of the studs out, only one was a problem.
-
I can't say about the brakes or oil filter. Does the water pump have any shaft play to it? As Bob mentioned earlier, maybe rebuild if it is the OE pump and replace if it is a replacement. A new one is about $30-40 I believe.
One note on the brakes...I have the 11 inch drums all around and on the rears I put on cylinders that were one size bigger than what Napa said to use, as I already had them. Anyway, they work fine, but occasionally on gravel I do get some lock up on the rear wheels when they should just be rolling. I would stick with the cylinder that is called for on the rears. Just my experience.

About the oil filter...
Walck's lists two filter sizes, the C-3 and the C-4
The C-3 is 3 3/4" wide by 4 1/4" tall, and the C-4 is 4 1/4" wide by 4 3/4" tall.
You have to dig a little on their website to find them both....
Maybe you have the small filter element in the large canister?
