Title: DTFM33's CJ3A Build
Post by: DTFM33 on May 30, 2015, 04:11:03 PM
I have stopped by a few times over the years and received great help and advice. I have a 49 CJ3A my father in law gave me. Not bad shape. The resto that was done 20 years ago was not what I would call a real good one. My Father in Law just passed away a few weeks ago and my daughter and I want to restore the Willys. Started making a list of items I need to start with. (See below) So we pulled the front end off last week and got ready to do a rebuild on it. (Already have some great advice on that from a few members.)

So I started shopping on CL to see what was out there. I found an advertisement for a "Basket Case Willys" Wasn't really what I was looking for, but I went to take a look.
My immediate needs for my CJ3A:
Front end rebuild Kit.
Steering Linkage
Brakes all around. All wheel cylinders shoes, drums.
2 decent front fenders
Tail gate
Transmission gears
New floor panels.

This is what I found when I went to look.

Floors are rough. Frame has been sand blasted and powder coated. Real dusty right now. It was in storage for a while

Why can't I post more than one picture at a time.
The basket case came with:
New front springs
New steering linkage

Tranny gears look pretty good.

And a much needed Air filter.

Nice score. I see 2A frame, fenders, and steering column. Hood probably is too but I can't tell from the pic.

You can use the fenders on your 3A but you will likely have to trim the driver's side one a little bit.

Is the frame usable on the 3A? Also, what do you guys think about the locking hubs?

Using a hosting site like Photobucket is the best way I've found to post multiple photos in one post.

The 2A frame has some differences, but for the most part, 3A stuff will bolt right up.  A CJ3A frame is much stronger than a 2A frame, but that one looks to be in excellent condition.

The hubs look like a semi-modern version made by Warn.  If they work, I'd keep them.  If you're going for a more vintage looking hub, they show up on eBay fairly frequently.
