Title: Skid building

Over the Thanksgiving break, I built a skid for my 1905 IHC Famous 6HP hit and miss engine. It started out as a 12' piece of 4"x6" oak and two 4"x1/8"x10' steel strips.

I cut the oak in half and 45ed the ends.

And I temporarily screwed the steel on the oak to bend it around.

I bought some old style nuts and screws for it to make it look authentic.

I found an old logging skid in the woods and it had these 4 old cast iron washers on it. I thought they would be perfect!

And voila! A nice authentic show ready engine!

Very nice.
Looks like it would do a great job of turning an ice cream freezer.

I wouldn't use this one. Way too much torque for one of those things. Probably break the gears. I am working on build an ice cream freezer with a smaller one.

That's pretty cool Nate.  Can you explain hoe that ignition works?  It looks like a gas torch heating a sealed probe of some type.  I've never seen that before.

It is best explained as a glow plug that is always on. It is a hollow tube and when the fuel touches it under compression, you get ignition. The timing is adjusted by the length of the hot tube. That one is perfect length for this engine.
