I do indeed want to know but I have learned that "the Gnome shares when he's ready and cannot be forced".

So, with that said, what's the heck are you up to???

"Goodies " covers a pretty broad range.
I think it basically translates to mean "Modified 3A".
I believe perhaps the modified 3A category has ideal potential to become the "Ultimate Universal Jeep" build.

You going all the way out or just how far will Super Ted deviate from the standard ??? Hmmm
This might make for some really good reading right ? ....
Building standard is totally cool.
Building modified can be Way Kewl  if done with proper Willys respect !

He will be set up for fighting brush fires with a bumper sprayer and a small water buffalo with a portable pump on it, a couple hundred feet of hose and a water tank. The hose and pump will be on the buffalo and I'll have a quick coupler between Ted and the buffalo for the bumper sprayer.

I'll also swap the T90 out for a 4 spd to have the lower gear for using the bumper sprayer.

My signature dual carbs will be in order too with the fresh engine.

He will also get some better axles, a D30 and offset D44 flanged rear with lockers.

32x9.50 super swamper TSLs with stock 15" wheels.

An old school red strobe light.

Swap out the 6 volt system to 12 to make adding lights easier

A slight lift to clear the tires.

He will still have the PTO winch, stock steering and the flat head 4 which has a starter w/mechanical linkage. Everything is going to be kept simple.

I want him to be able to get anywhere (hence the lockers) that our big brush truck can't.

I was going to go with a PTO pump, but the problem lies with the construction of the PTO. It goes through the transmission, so if I want to pump and roll with the bumper sprayer, the 1st gear reduction would render the pump useless because it wouldn't turn fast enough to create enough pressure. Plus, a portable pump is nice because you can take it to the water source and fill the tank up easily.

I will also be able to play in the woods with him too. All of these mods will be bolt on, so if I wanted to in the future, I can return him to stock with ease. I'll also keep all his original parts too.

Now the reason for all this? My fire chief and assistant chief thought it would be cool. I can see the potential in this. There are lots of ATV trails around here and Ted fits down them with ease. He will make life a bit easier. They want him red, but I like him green and I already have my red jeep!

All the parts are coming from the Jalopy because I am getting very sick of fixing that thing. Plus, I just love putting around the woods with the 4 cyl over a V6 and any day. I also have plans for something else for Radical wheeling.  ;)

Not radical and this seems do-able and quite useful.
You just gotta love useful.

I'll comment if I may.
Although the D30 and the flanged D44 are great little axles,
I consider them as overkill with a 134 engine having maximum torque @ 108 lb ft.
Even geared down with a T98 the 8-1/2" clutch will never break a good set of tapered 19 spline shafts unless the jeep is severely abused.
With 9.50 x 15 tires the standard D25 steering angle can still be upgraded to Rzeppa shafts @ 29* angle.
Yes some type of traction differentials are always a priority when traveling off-road.
A T98-A should be especially useful for your needs.
I see the 4 speed as the most radical aspect of this build.

You say a mild lift.
I don't believe the 9.50 x 15 tires will require a lift for clearance.
From what I have seen standard springs found in good condition actually have more lift than the so call 1" Superlift springs.
My rebuilt 10 leaf Mather springs far surpass a set of new 1" Superlifts.
Besides you will need springs rated for a heavy load if you install a water tank.
A good set of 11 leaf Mather rear springs from an M38 would be optimum.

Plus, I just love putting around the woods with the 4 cyl over a V6 and any day

Yes ya gotta love the quasi tractor droning of the 134 Willys

I'm putting the D30 and D44 in because I want the selectable lockers which are already in them.

I'm not going to put lift springs in, just do spring over. I'll build my own leaf packs. If I do it right, it will be less than 4" of lift. My D30 already has high steer knuckles on it, so steering will not be an issue.
Title: Re: Building super Ted
Post by: oldtime on November 20, 2015, 06:10:26 PM
So it's to be spring over with high steer and use the standard bellcrank with the Ross steering ?

I wonder about the short tie rod ( AKA drag link) angle on that.
Title: Re: Building super Ted
Post by: garage gnome on November 20, 2015, 07:01:35 PM
I was going to keep the stock tie rods. They should be long enough to reach the knuckles. The D30 3" wider if I'm not mistaken, and the high steer knuckles move the holes for the tie rods in about an inch on either side. I think it will work. If not, I will have to cross that bridge when I get there.

The high steer knuckles bring the tie rods up over the springs.

I built the strobe light stand today. It folds down for easy storage. Still have to paint and wire it, but it sure fits nice!

IMHO that's the best looking universal jeep color ever.
Absolutely love the dark green look with black accessories.

This old 3B of mine is still my personal top favorite over the years:

Haven't done too much to ted for the past few months with the holidays and I was away for work. Yesterday I got the ambition, with the help from a friend, to pull the engine out. And today I pulled it all apart. I was amazed to see nothing destroyed inside there. All the rings were intact. Only had two broken valve springs. The bottom coil broke off. Cylinder walls look good with no major gouges and the crank had no big scraps. I was surprised too to see that all the studs came out. Cam is in good shape too. There wasn't too much sludge in the bottom of the oil pan either. Maybe an 1/8" or so.

What's you plan with the block? Just clean it up and bolt everything back together or will there be some machining in order?

I ask because once I pull the motor out of my red 3A I'm not exactly sure how to proceed with it if everything appears to be in as reasonably decent shape as Ted's is.

Oh it will definitely be going to the machine shop. I know the compression was very low and oil was being blown up the dipstick tune into the air tube, so the the cylinder bores are worn for sure. Ive gone this far so might as well go all the way!

So the Jalopy is going to sacrifice itself for its friends, huh?
Kind of sad, but also a better fate than abandonment.

Looks like a 1970 or 1971 offset flanged rear assembly.
Looks like a 1976 D30 with strange, non standard knuckle arms.
What's the ratio in the axles ?

Yeah, I got sick of fixing the Jalopy.

The rear is from a 1970 CJ5 ad the front is from 76-83. It was disc, I converted it to drums. I put 5.38s in them.

Got the D30 in the front of Ted today. It bolted right up and I was able to keep it looking all original. I ended up having to swap out the knuckles with unmodified ones because they interfered with the shocks.

Got the engine all all back together today along with my dual carb intake. There will be a write-up on making the intake once I finish the whole set-up on this jeep.

I also started work on the on board air mount. That's why I didn't paint the whole engine. There will be more on this to come as well.

Got the OBA and alternator bracket done today. I turned down a piece of 1/2" pipe in the lathe so it would fit in the original generator mounts. I only did the ends so there was a shoulder left to keep the pipe from sliding out. From there I made a plate that the compressor was mounted to.

(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/1949%203A/AD2A7B70-C48A-44CE-8944-0F418BB4DF4F.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/1949%203A/AD2A7B70-C48A-44CE-8944-0F418BB4DF4F.jpg.html)

I went to the local hardware store and got some turnbuckles for the tensioners. I made some bushings up in the lathe that fit inside the eyelets. I didn't want to use rod ends because I wanted to keep the "government repair" look. This compressor was nice to use because it had two pulleys.

looking great, while i still think your level of tech as compared to my bench seat build is lacking a little ;)

in all seriousness id be interested to hear about any difference in engine performance/economy with the twin carbs (not that it will ever be a race car). as i am sorta new to flatties, was this ever done in the factory?

You know me Ryan, I'm such a slacker!

Trenton, the red 3A you see in the background has had dual carbs for 3 years? I can't remember how long ago I did that. Anyways, they really wake up the Lhead. I noticed much more power and throttle response while getting the same fuel mileage. I used yf carbs from an fhead on that.

This want a factory option. Just something I came up with.

After some measuring, I realized the transfer case shifters were going to hit the toolbox, so I made up a bracket to move them back to their original hole in the tub.

That kind of realization would stop my project dead in its tracks. Not Nate. Simply a minor diversion. Break out the welder and carry on.

That is an interesting solution.
Willys Motor's solution was to put sheet metal over the existing hole in the floor pan area.
Then move the hole back and take the bend out of both transfer case shift levers.

Got the transmission in today. Wasn't too bad other than getting the T18 cover in through the hole in the floor!

No  >:( stupid pertonix dropped the ball. I ordered the kit a month ago and I got an email saying it was on back order. Then apparently my credit card didn't go through. So i finally called them up and got it all sorted out. So that's the big hold up with starting the engine. I wasn't very happy with them...

As super Ted nears completion, I picked up the beginnings for phase 2 on the project. The plan is to put a removable skid unit in it with a tank and a pump along with a connection for the bumper sprayer and 150 feet of 1" forestry hose. Oh, and it has to be painted to match as well. ;)

This past Monday, tragedy struck. I started up Ted, after priming the oil system, and he was running great, after some carburetor tuning. I let him get up to temperature and I followed the break in procedure in the manual. Then I took him for a test ride around the house. There was nothing out of the ordinary for noises other then the ticking of the valves, which is expected. Oil pressure was great as well. Then badness. About 2hrs after initial startup and while driving, the jeep came to a abrupt stop and I mean a DEAD stop. A few choice words were said at this time. The engine would not turn over...

I towed it back to the garage with the other fire jeep (how ironic). My immediate thought was that the head gasket blew and a cylinder was full of coolant. So I pulled the plugs and nothing. Next, I drained the oil. Looked perfect with no metal in it. Next thought was a bent valve, so I pulled the manifolds off and valve cover. Nothing wrong there. Next idea was the oil jet somehow broke off and got stuck in the timing gears. So off goes the oil pan and timing gear cover. All is well there. Out comes the engine next. I started popping bearing caps off and checking the pistons to make sure the pistons didn't get stuck in the bores. Nope, they all move fine. Then off comes the rear main cap.

Voila, the rear bearing had welded itself partially to the crank. I brought the crank and bearing back to the machine shop and they were amazed at what happened. They polished the journal again and it turned out to be ok. They also ordered a new set of main bearings. I guess it could have been much worse, but it still sucked having to pull the engine out.

As you can see, it's only the right side of the bearing that let go.

And the fun continues. The block has to go back to the machine shop. #3 and 4 exhaust valve stems are scored up due to the new valve guides.

Ugh.....what a drag. At least it's  early enough in the season that you'll still have Ted back together before it even really warms up around here.

Yeah, the trails are mucky anyways. I would do more damage than good out there anyways.

They have no idea what happened to the crank and bearing. As for the valve guides, I think once they heated up, the clearance was not enough.

Well...that sucks.  Stuff like this freaks me out.  Maybe a little gunk blocking the oil hole?  Let us know if they find a smoking gun.

Well, the saga continues. I got the block back from the machine shop and started assembling the engine. Put the crank in and plasti-gauged it. That was OK. So I lubed it up and put it back in with no rear seal. Locked right up. I put a screwdriver in the flywheel bolts, and got it to spin, but it was still pretty tight. So I started taking caps off until I found the tight one. It turned out to be the front one. I pulled the bearing out and there were random shiny spots on the bearings. For haha's I put the old new bearing in from the first rebuild. It spun great then.

Ok, the heck with it, the engine is going together that way. Got the engine all together and back in. Got it running and its running great! Took it for a little ride today and now the front main seal is pouring out oil. Ugh! I just can't win with this thing!

I feel like parts are just junk now.

Update! Ted is the very happy super jeep. Only issue is that about 3/4 throttle, it doesn't run too great. Its getting too much gas. I made some new jets up and it is better, but still not great. Waiting on some brass rod to make new ones. I made some out of steel just to it out.

Original jet is in the middle.
