If you can remember back 3 years ago or so, I build a custom frame with coil spring suspension for my trail rig, The Jalopy. Well, this past winter, I was driving across a frozen pond when the front axle broke through. Long story short, winch + ice = - front axle. I ended up ripping it out and destroying the front end so.... [smiley=evil.gif]
Already have a great starting platform. A strong frame, awesome running 225, T18 and large hole D18. Just gotta do something about them stock 2A axles...
I have big plans for it now. YJ leafs, D44 rear, NT D30 up front, tera low kit in the D18, Ox lockers front and rear, super swamper boggers 35 x 10.5s and some more goodies. I just can't resist myself on this build. Already have a stock 3A for wheeling (Ted) and now I want something a bit more radical that I would feel comfortable with letting a lady friend drive on the trail.
I picked these guys up today. $200 each. [smiley=thumbup.gif] D30 has 2.92s and I think the 44 has 4.88s if I can do my math right. I spun the pinion 2 times, and the short axle spun just over once and the long side didn't move at all.

what did you find out about ted steering? you said that something was wrong. did you get it fix?
dennis
-
Oh haha, yeah that. No, Ted is fine. That was just a joke. I said that while going across the ice at 40mph, his wheel would cut either left or right and I couldn't stop it. What I was trying to say is that he has a mind of his own, like Herbie. In reality, I was doing it, but I was saying that to give him a personality.

Nate..........very carefully back away slowly from this next project. If you start involving a "lady friend" all your spare time and money for these projects will mysteriously disappear. :-* Your long, late nights in the shop tinkering on things will be a thing of the past.
Before you know it, you'll be buying flowers instead of rear ends... :o
 ;)

Haha, don't worry Mark. She has a boyfriend, so don't worry. She wants a jeep, but can't afford it, so I'll let her borrow mine while I drive Ted.
-
I went down this road with my YJ... ended up putting 2.5 ton rockwells under her. I suggest not letting the bug bite that deep. :-/
-
Lots of progress. Rebuilt t case, no more floor rot and spring over axles.

-
Hmmm.
SOA huh?
Now you are getting carried away.
Well have fun anyway.
-
With it spring under, it was only an inch taller than Ted. That wasn't gonna do...
-
Well, today I'll rip it back apart for paint. I'm going to do it up as a Chester fire dept jeep since I'm on the volunteer fire dept here in town.

I like the new changes...Is that Ted's tailgate I see? Custom top or did you add fasteners to the windshield to do the military top thing? Does the extra height make it feel any different off road?
Gonna be a tough winter they say, hope you have a heater and side curtains so you can still go places when the blizzards hit. I think you'll need the ground clearance for the snowbanks.
-
Wait just a minute..do I see HOCKEY PUCKS???The sacrilege..... ;D :o :o :D
-
The tailgate was one I restored for wall art in my room. The top is from Ted, M38 winter enclosure. I haven't driven it much on the road, but it is kinda sketchy because it wanders. I have to mess with the steering adjustments some and add a stabilizer. I put a 40,000 but heater in and with the full top on, you can drive around in a t shirt on 20 days!
I had to put the hockey pucks in the back to make the body sit right. The front mounts are on 1/4" rubber.

If Satan were to drive a Willys I bet it'd be that one...pretty wicked!
-
Envious for sure over here ! Sweet collection, nice work
-
I'll post some more pictures when I get home from working away this week. But some time in November, I ripped it apart to paint it, but decided not to. I had some stuff to still do then like add my under rear floor compartment and a few more patches. Just wait on titles now!

I'm going to add some angry eyes too! >:(

Thanks!

Ya! Nice. I like the almond grill too.
Tim

I like it!
Looks like it could be somehow related to "Christine"....
Don't turn your back to it.....
-
Haha, funny you should say that Randy, but my DD is named Christine! She drives me insane trying to keep her clean!!!! :D
-
Well, I worked on it all day, and finally it occurred to me that:
DD
Means Daily Driver!! :o
-
Did another mod today. Guarantees infinite horsepower. All it requires is a piece of 3/4" emt and an American flag!

Nate,
With the snow we are having I was wondering if you'd be out playing in your Jalopy! Can't wait to get my jeep running. Not sure I'll be out in this weather though!
Kirk

Those pictures were from last weekend. We didn't get much snow here. Only 6". I was out playing it the snow though!

Yesterday was loads of fun. Got to rip apart the front axle to replace the inner axle seals. The passenger side one was bad and creamy goop was leaking out of it.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/AE85CF42-D019-42CB-A2E6-0C86DDDF0EC8.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/AE85CF42-D019-42CB-A2E6-0C86DDDF0EC8.jpg.html)
On the Dana 30, the hubs come apart the same as a D25 or 27.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/20FD02F7-DCD5-4542-9E7E-9DB732849FF3.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/20FD02F7-DCD5-4542-9E7E-9DB732849FF3.jpg.html)
To pull the spindle off, a special tool is required. It threads on the end of the spindle and a slide hammer is used to pull it off after take the 6 retaining nuts off.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/67AABC79-4833-48EA-AC96-367F7516244D.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/67AABC79-4833-48EA-AC96-367F7516244D.jpg.html)
-
While I had the spindle off, I decided to replace the spindle bearings. I had put all new spindle seals in previously. A jaw puller and slide hammer pulls those out.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/A7269427-6F95-4839-879D-AADD18A78DC2.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/A7269427-6F95-4839-879D-AADD18A78DC2.jpg.html)
I put the spindles on the lathe and polished up where the hub seal rides and also where the spindle seal rides.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/6F7C0C71-8B95-4EAD-8651-EF2CA80D67AB.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/6F7C0C71-8B95-4EAD-8651-EF2CA80D67AB.jpg.html)
I used a socket to tap the new spindle bearings inlace. Be sure to not tap them in too far or the spindle seal will not work. It rides agains the bearing. Measure the depth before pulling the old ones out.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/2C6D399B-60C2-4A4E-8943-E11BD0B70886.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/2C6D399B-60C2-4A4E-8943-E11BD0B70886.jpg.html)
-
And then after pulling the axle shafts out, clean up the ends where the inner seals ride with some emery cloth. A really high tech tool is required to beat them out. A 36mm socket on a piece of threaded rod. I put a nut on the inside to hold the socket on as well.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/8AF31A33-9C91-4DCC-8ACD-F949E8071A78_2.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/8AF31A33-9C91-4DCC-8ACD-F949E8071A78_2.jpg.html)
Once both are out, clean the tubes to get the gunk out. Then the tricky part is getting the new seal to start straight. The 36 mm socket fits in the seal nicely. I tapped the seal in and then put a 1/2" to 3/8" adaptor on. A piece of 3/4" pipe sticking through the tubes makes it easy to beat the seal in all the way.
(http://i748.photobucket.com/albums/xx125/willyscjmj/The%20Jalopy/0E599C45-2BB0-444D-80B1-5014F41E7A0B.jpg) (http://s748.photobucket.com/user/willyscjmj/media/The%20Jalopy/0E599C45-2BB0-444D-80B1-5014F41E7A0B.jpg.html)
And now it is a matter of reassembling the axle! Happy wheeling!

I don't know if anyone remembers, but in 2011, I built a matching trailer for my '53.

Anyways, I stopped using it with that jeep. So I converted it to spring over, put some BFG KM2 mud terrains on it and I also did away with the dumb drop down leg I had mad to look like a Bantam. The leg is still there, just don't need it now. I wan't to use the trailer for multi day wheeling trips. I can put all my camping gear and supplies in it. Maybe even put my tent on it so I'm up off the ground.

Very cool. I keep eyeing my Willys and Bantam trailers trying to figure a way to make them into some sort of camping trailers....preferably without permanently disfiguring them. It may be easier to just go with another trailer altogether so I can chop it up guilt free.
-
I really like the articulation on that jeep. it's really got some flex going on. looks good. keep the pics comin'!

I really like that top. that's what I'm wanting to get for mine for winter. do you know what that style is called, or where I can get one? thanks.
-
It's the original style 7 piece top. I usually keep the half cab roof on all year. It is a real pain to take it off.
-
I got it from new life canvas too.
-
I got it from new life canvas too.
thanks! I wonder if they make a plastic rear curtain for the front half??
-
Does anyone find it very difficult to get in touch with new life canvas? I think I have called a dozen times and left messages but no response. Are they still in business?
George

You Wouldn't believe it! I just talked to Mona! Yeaaaa.....she has been out for a while recovering from a car accident. I should have tried to call before I wrote the message.
She is back in full swing - looks like they do a nice job on the 7 pc. top.
