Well, I procured an L head.

It freely turns over by hand. It's been rebuilt at one time by a place in Texas.

Even so, I still plan on rebuilding it. At the very least I wanna tear it down and see the internals. Plus, the water pump bolts were snapped off at some point as well as a ignition coil bracket stud. Someone also had cut or broke the left motor mount flange so I may be replacing it. The weld looks pretty nasty and not very structural. It's missing a few parts, like the oil filler tube, valve cover and pcv system. The water pump is pretty haggard too. So I have some sourcing to do...

Anybody have any tips or pointers on the tear down prior to taking it to the machine shop?

I must agree with the others.  All the forums have good information to offer.  We all tend to cross over anyway.

I've had the pleasure of meeting many here on the 3A page.  A really great group of folks...all willing to help you make your Willys the best it can be.

Take lots of pictures as you go along...not just for the forum but for your own use...

Someday you'll wonder "where did this thing go?"

Yay! I haven't been voted off the island :)

This week I'm going to be picking up an L head that's in pieces but still turns over freely enough? I've been doing some reading about rebuilding that motor. We're beginning this week also to remove the body from the frame. That should go fairly quick from what I can see. Then it'll be time to remove the motor and drive train. Should be fun disassembling it :D

As always, any pearls of wisdom will always be welcomed and appreciated. Thanks to those who have chimed in already!

Most of us are on the 2A,3A,3B,G503 and earlyCJ5 forum so....

We are all Willys enthusiasm and we are helping each other whatever kind of Willys we own.

I like to think that the 3A forum is very good for technical stuff help, and there is less political discusion here.

Keep posting your stuff here, it's very interesting.

P.S. The quality of a forum is made by the quality of their members!

Either way, most of us are on both sites.  You can't shake us.   :)

Yeah, I measured the wheel wells the other day and they are 34". That's when I knew I at least had a 2A tub. The clutch/brake pedal assembly mounting bracket and the rear differential led me to determine that I have a 2A frame.

Guess the elephant in the room then is should I not bother posting anything on a "3A" forum? I can take my toys and go to the 2A forum  :P

Measure the tops of the rear wheel house...the 3a should be about 32" and the 2a about 34"......if you have the 2a size then maybe you should stick with 2a...but i like the 3a windshield too....

Lots of info here

I've sourced an L head that will needs be rebuilt but that was my plan anyway.

So, would you guys try to make it as close to a 2A or 3A? I like the 3A windshield better than the 2A. Like you guys have said, unless anybody really gets crawling under there, nobody will really know.

I agree with Rick on this.  It may be very difficult to change the legal status at this point.  Besides, very few people you will cross paths with would be able to tell the difference between a 2A and 3A.  The obvious difference is the windshield.  After that, most of the differences require digging and crawling under stuff.

If it makes you feel better, the 3A is much more rare than the 2A. :)

"Do I try to make it a 2A as much as possible?" What do I do about that legally? I've already registered it as a 3A.

If its registered as a 3A its a 3A as far as anyone needs to know. Don't muddy the waters at DMV. 2A, 3A who cares, it's a salad jeep, nuthin wrong with that. You and the boys fix it up the way you want it and have fun with it.

Well, I was reading about installing a dual reservoir master brake cylinder in my CJ because the PO had done a hack job of installing a swing from above brake arm/ mc combo. All the 2A guys were describing a pedal bracket just like the one on my jeep. It got me thinking about what others have said on here. So I googled the differences and went out and looked at mine. Well, it definitely has a 2A tub and frame. But, the vin has a 3A serial number. Needless to say, I'm a bit discouraged by that. It's not that I planned to restore it to original condition but I'm not a huge fan of mixing models really. It definitely has a 3A windshield frame on there. So, my question is, "Do I try to make it a 2A as much as possible?" What do I do about that legally? I've already registered it as a 3A.

I'm also seeing a few characteristics on the frame that are more 2A than 3A.

After 60-70 years, it's fairly common to find a little of this and a little of that on our Willys discoveries.  Just peak at mine.  It's a 3A, dressed like an M38, with a GPW engine and 2A seat frames.  I'm all over the map.  They can become interesting time capsules.  You can't always figure out its individual pieces of history, but it's fun to speculate.

I always enjoy watching folks bring these things back to life.

I'm CJ naive. I do know that according to the VIN it's a 3A. The seat grams have been hacked apart and welded back together. I'm sure with as old as it is it's had a lot of swapping and Jimmy-rigging done to it. I can take other photos as needed.
