About the "Applaud" and "Smite" Buttons

Several members have asked about the Applaud and Smite buttons that now appear under each member's profile information.

These are not replacements for the old Like button. They are part of SMF's built-in Karma system.

Applaud increases a member's Karma by +1.
Smite decreases a member's Karma by -1.

Unlike the previous Like feature, these buttons affect a member's overall Karma rather than a specific post.

The previous Like/Dislike modification had to be removed during the forum upgrades because it was causing compatibility issues. Since the built-in Karma system remained active, the Applaud and Smite buttons became visible.

I'm currently reviewing whether the Karma system is something the community finds useful, or whether it would be better to disable it and eventually replace it with a more modern "Like" system in the future.

If there isn't much feedback or interest in keeping the Karma system, I'll probably go ahead and remove it. If you have a preference one way or the other, please let me know!

Thanks for your feedback and for helping shape the future of CJ3APage.

FYI... "applaude" and "smite" buttons are shown under "karma" (another unknown use/purpose... IMO) of the poster's info.  You too have it showing under your info here Rus.

"under....the poster's info"

No wonder I didn't see it, lol.  I do now!

Added:  After clicking on your applaud I saw a +1 for Karma.  I guess you can "rate" a member on their posts and see the Karma go up and down.  So, I gave scoutpilot one too, since I said I would in previous post!!

Your intentions are clear to me. Thank you very much.

Also clicking the non-existent invisible "applaud" button for all the help!

I had to wait for more postings as I didn't even understand.  I've seen the emoji buttons but the "applause" button threw me, since I've never seen one.

Pascal's explanation of the removal of "Like/Dislike" was supposed to help with posts not showing.

OK, THANKS for that "correction" (I guess I was anticipating positivity), but I still do not know the function or purpose of "applaud", or WHERE/IF it shows up since I don't use those yellow symbols.  If that is what is the impact, and specifically for you Mr Scott Pilot, I have "tried" to do what I thought was "showing appreciation for your recent efforts and knowledge shared" by hitting the "applaud button" since there is no longer a "like button".  I hope you received my "intent".  If not, at least now you know "your above and beyond expertise and availability" was observed, learned from, and appreciated by me.  Thank You!

Read that again. Smites take smiles off of faces.

OK, the "like button" disappeared, and now I see "applaud" or "smiles" buttons... but WHAT do they do or accomplish???
