great timing for this post, i'm * less and getting a * done,, i have a 62" 3b and the vin prefix is 88508 then the vin as it is stamped on the frame right?

i'm in pa, and the cost the go threw the court is 1700$ with a guy from classic car law here in pa. i'm going threw the state of v.t. and just pay the tax. On the what that think it it should be taxed at. the nada site they want you to use for a tax value doesn't have old jeeps, other then hagerty ( which i thought was pricey and high for values )  any other places that may price it at what i paid for it.  the body was pretty shot and the engine was a total rebuild, as was the rest :( it should be worth a hagerty price when i'm done

Well I would just have the flat behind the water pump restamped with the number on the title, and not worry about it.  It is a pre VIN number so no one is going to care.

California is a nightmare from what I understand. I would get as much information on the DMV website as you possibly can and also deal with a rural dmv place.

Yes you need to go through the trouble of updating the title if you want it to be accurate.

I'm in Oregon which only has most of CA's stupid laws. My title came from my Dad he changed the title to his name in 1962 The title has the serial number of the original 1948 engine on it. I changed the Title to my name in 2002 when I bought the jeep from him. I then had dataplates4u.com make up a matching Body and patent plate with that number on it. As that original engine was not in the Jeep at least as far back as 1963 (I don't know if the engine was changed before dad bought the jeep or right after) Now everything Stamped Plates, Title and Registration all match.

The 4J number is likely the engine block serial number, which is different than the vehicle serial number (VIN).  If the block hasn't been "decked", the number should be on the top of the block, on the flat spot that sticks out in front of the cylinder head just above the water pump.

I have heard that in the old days, when VIN tags were held onto the body with regular screws and often fell off unnoticed, that the engine block number was used in place of the actual body number.  I guess this was based on the theory that it was unlikely that the engine would fall off unnoticed. :-)   This didn't address the issue of an engine being replaced, or the block being machined in a way to accidentally remove the block number, and is why the system headed toward securely fastened ID tags on the body...and the number on the tag being stamped into several places on the car frame and body.


Chances are that if the engine block serial number is still there, and it matches the paper title, things shouldn't be too bad.  Note all the weasel words in the last sentence.  The MVD inspectors are *usually* pretty sharp on this kind of stuff, but.....sometimes....

If the engine number isn't readable or the MVD inspector is in a terrible mood, then my silly wild guess is that a bonded title might be needed.  I've never needed a bonded title, but from my reading about the bonded title process, it's "follow the procedure, pay some bond money and push red tape through some hoops".  Eventually, after a few years time (3 years, maybe), the bond requirement ends and a regular title gets issued.  When the bond requirement ends, if you put up the cash for the bond, then you get the money back.  Or if you paid an insurance company a fee to put up the bond...the insurance company made some money.

I just sold my 3B, and the buyer raised a question about the title and I need help from people that know. The title has a number starting with 4J and a few digits, and I never thought about it, DMV didn't care. But, the buyer noticed that is not the number on the firewall, it's the 454GB2 and a serial number. He's worried  that the VIN on the title is wrong. We are assuming they originally used the number on the original engine as the vin for the vehicle. However, the number on the current engine is different - so I am assuming that the engine was replaced.

The buyer is worried the title is wrong. So, do we need to go through the process to get the vin on the title changed to the 454GB2 number? Has anyone ever changed a vin? It says verification is required. At DMV? At CHP?
