The info already provided is top notch.  And though it's mentioned in the article posted by Rus, it's not emphasized. 

The starters for the 2A and 3A are different, as are the flywheels.  These components are interchangeable from engine to engine, but you need to make sure your starter type matches the flywheel type.   In other words, you need to keep the 3A starter with the 3A flywheel...and keep the 2A starter with the 2A flywheel.   We can offer more details on this if you need them.

Took me a while to get my brain cells firing.  I don't know much about this and believe 64CJ5 has pointed out the biggest difference.  I knew there was more information posted about "adapting" an older engine into the new CJ3A:

The front plate would need to be changed.  The motor mount tabs on the 2a face to the rear.  The left motor mount tab on the 3a faces to the front.  The change was made to fit in a different fuel pump.  The frame part of the motor mount on the 3a was moved forward on the left side.  It is riveted to the frame.  There are some differences between early and late L head engines.  The left mount would be the only problem.

I have an L head out of a 2A what will have to be done to install it in a 3A? or can it not be done Thank You Will
