Well you could try it yourself, depending on what is wrong with it.  I just did my old farm tractor.  Took it apart, replaced the brushes ($12), polished the commutator and put on a new drive ($73).  Works just fine now.  On the other hand I had my 3A starter done and it was around $200.

I haven't gotten anything fixed in a long time, so I'm not sure.  It is possible that the price would be half to nearly the full replacement cost of a new one.  I guess it would depend on the shop - and how much needs fixing once it's opened up.  The upside to rebuilding the one you have - you know it will fit.

    How much should I expect to pay for a starter motor rebuild? This mechanic works for an Import business. TY
