Hi F Bill, when I saw the lack of radiator mounts, I realized my 3A was not a 49 but maybe a later 50. Who knows at this point since the data tags are missing. I'm thinking the T-90 may possibly be a 46 as the wagon input shafts are much larger. The PO could have just used an available case and replaced the insides.  I'll know for sure when I remove the tub and can place an eye on the casting numbers.

FYI, I picked up a 43 GPW last weekend. The body is toast and the frame has been butchered. However, the drive train, axles, and leaf springs are in decent shape.

Later 3A frames had no radiator mounting provisions as they used a sidemount radiator. Bob would know the Serial those started at.

If that t-90case has a 1945 date code I will swap ya a cane shift case for it, maybe even more...Chances are that it may be out of a pickup or wagon instead of an early 2A.

Hello athawk11, I thought of that when I pull the body off.  However, upon a closer inspection, I noticed the T-90 is equipped for column shift  and the TC is missing the E-Brake drum. I'm starting to believe my 3A is a Frankenstein.  Also, the frame is missing the radiator mounts.  With the exception of one small area needing a couple weld beeds, the frame in in great shape. I'm still pondering my intentions of what to do with it.

Dan,

The transfer case might shed some light on the year built.  Then again, it might not.  If it hasn't been removed, there is a date plate on the top.  I have a 1949.  The TC date for me was 1948.

There are some body characteristics that can place it as an early 3A or a Late 3A.  Bob W and F Bill have probably done the most research on this.

A recent discussion/research thread by Bill talks about the ribs on the top of the rear wheel wells.  It appears that on the early 3As the long rib goes all the way to the front edge of the wheel well.  On late 3As the long rib stops a 1/2" short of the front edge.

Lots of photos of different areas on your tub could help determine the age.

Welcome the the 3A page!! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Yes, that was me you purchased the MB chassis from. I hope you made some good use out of it. The restored GPW you saw in the garage is now owned by a gentleman in North Carolina. God, I miss that jeep! I've recently reacquired the flat fender bug desiring to restore another MB, GPW, CJ2A, or CJ3A.

Dan, welcome... Did I buy a rolling chassis from you a long time ago in or after a snowstorm??

I've always felt the 3A was the ultimate flatfender, having evolved to the point where all the bugs were worked out. I'd say go for the refurbishing job!

Again, welcome to the page. We might be one of the quieter jeep sites but questions always seem to get answered and we try to keep the drama and bs at a minimum here. So far it has been really pretty good.

Good morning all, I decided to join the forum after purchasing the hulk of an unknown year CJ3A. Both the data plate and original engine have been removed by the previous owner(s). However, their is a Dana 41 rear differential causing me to believe it's a 49 or 50. If anyone can assist in determining the year possibly by another serial number location, I'm all ears. Also, I'm currently on the fence as to my intentions for this beauty and may possibly be open to selling it to an interested party.

Thanks,

Dan
