It's been a while but I think you are right....the inner bucket is sort of the "ball" in a ball and socket arrangement.....the springs give tension and the adjusting screws do just that...adjust!!

Yeap,  That does the trick I think.  I think that the inner bucket Is supposed to sightly bottom in the outer bucket and that is what keeps everything stable.  I could not see what was supposed to hold up the side with the springs.

I am looking for a few photos of how the stock 3A headlight buckets are assembled.  My spring retainers were rotted off and I can't seem to figure out how to put all the pieces together.  Please email me if you have pics.
