I have parts coming.� What a sucker I am!!!� �I don�t know if my cam is OK to use or not so I�ll probably end up tearing the whole engine down.�

My new oil pump did the same thing, but didn't hurt my cam gear. It doesn't look like the cam is damaged all that badly.

I'm sorry to read about this.� �The cam removal isn't difficult, but it's 'involved'.� The front, top and bottom have to come off.� Valve and springs need to be removed.�

Perhaps the cam isn't damaged enough to have to pull it.� The helical design of the meshing gears will allow the cam to function fine if damage to the cam gear isn't severe.

Slinger, I haven't been following this board much lately so unfortunately I missed the oil pump discussion.� I did not change the gasket because the pump was new.� The reason I bought the new pump was the relief spring broke in my original oil pump and I could not find a replacement spring.� I guess I should have looked harder.


 I disassembled the failed oil pump and found the shaft galled up. That was enough to stop the pump.� It looks to me like the galling is a result from sloppy de-burring after the machine work or debris left in the pump at assembly. It�s not much only .005�

cj,  there is quite a discussion on this board about oil pump failures, you can look around and see if you can find it, should be easy, but I'll ask a question first, when you rebuilt the motor, did you use a Felpro gasket set and did you put the kit gasket into the oil pump between the pump body and the backing plate?  In my experience this is the problem with the pumps, the Felpro kit gasket is too thin, when the engine gets warm the pump expands and th distance between the rotor and the backing plate shrinks due to heat.  That locks up the pump and causes the problem you have, you can ask me how I know but I think you figured that out.  My suggestion is to call John at Midwest MIlitary, he usually has NOS pump gaskets in stock, when you get it you will see that it is quite a bit thicker than the one in the Felpro kit.  I put a NOS gasket in my rebuild 3500 miles ago and have had no problem.  good luck.

I had to rebuild my engine for a second time after the first rebuild failed due to a plugged oil hole in a rod.� It looked like a piece of a thread got stuck in the hole. Now my new Oil Pump seized and took out the gears on the oil pump shaft and a piece of a cam gear.

 I am seriously thinking of calling a junk metal guy and ending this project, but just in case I don�t. How far do I need to tear the engine down in order to replace to cam?� The book says the head needs to come off but I�m not looking forward to that.

One more question. In doing some poking around I found that the failure of new oil pumps is common, so were might I find a good one?
