I had one of those felt kits, and was going to use it, but it was a little too thick and was making the tank fit a little tight. So I used some webbed strapping that I bought ($3) at the MVPA show last spring..and I'm finding more  uses for it all over as Bretto mentioned....shoulda bought two

I ended up using the extra grill welt under the hold-down strap.

Yes Tim, I love that stuff.  I used it in multiple spots on my rig.

I used some floor mat material and cut it into strips. I glued them to tank with contact cement and on the strapping I secured it with thin copper wire through the staple holes.

The original is very similar to a light duty canvas tie strap used with footman loops etc. You might be able to find this at a better price than a grille welting kit. A local Army Navy Surplus is a great place to look.

I used a piece of rubber infused with fibers. I also used it between the fender to tub...and grille to fender. It offers the anti squeak characteristics, but doesn't hold water like the original materials.

I sent some to Bretto to try. I think he ended up liking it too.

Originally it was the same stuff as the grille welting. On my 53, I bought another grille welt kit and stuck that under the strap.

Thanks Nate!

I was just rooting around in my CJ-5 leftovers looking for a clip-in 5/16 nut for the accelerator foot rest, and found a grill welting strip that I had never installed...how about that...

When I cleaned the old strap it had bits of some cardboard-like material sill held in place by the staples.

I've thought of using cork, leather and the fuzzy side of self-adhesive Velcro.

What do you suppose was used originally and is it available?
