What I did when I had to replace one on my '53 was I cut the old off with a cutter wheel, but I left the rivets in place. I carefully cut around them and left the metal under too. I then drilled the holes out in my new bracket to the correct size, I want to say 11/16 or 5/8. It fit perfectly and you can't even tell I had changed it out. It also prevented the mis-alignment you are worried about.

Guys - I've got to replace the front shackle brackets and got to thinking about alignment. I'm going to remove the old brackets - they're rusted out - weld in new ones. Any tips on ensuring that I get the new brackets in the correct location? I've thought about marking the frame where the current ones are, �but not sure that the marks will survive as I cut/grind off the old brackets.

Is that sufficient?

My concern is introducing any kind of alignment related shimmy/shake/death wobble due to the shackles being misaligned.
