Okay SAW,
I see it now. �With that short hose connected, you really shouldn't have the fuel line squeeeeze. � �Could the pump or cam lobe be the problem? �I read in another post, maybe Carl, that had issues at altitude with a weak...old fuel pump. �Your pump doesn't look old, but you may have done a good job of cleaning it up. �

This link dicusses similar, but other fuel issues. �It talks about the lobe on the cam sliding too far forward making the pump inactive. � �

When your trouble shooting a problem you can't use a shotgun approach. You have to stop and think the problem out. To get it home use what ever method you can but when you approach the trouble shooting method it has to be organized and systematic. Once you start pulling things apart you may have destroyed any evidence your looking for.

I was an engine failure trouble shooter at a Cummins distributor and learned early on to be careful and find everything I can before tearing an engine down. Once the engine is disassembled your testing is done and everything is visual from there out.

To many times people start tearing something apart without knowing what they are looking for or having a plan.

Yes, this pic shows the fall back rubber line that goes to the tank drain.
  I installed a set of orginal steel lines,back when this all started. If you look closely you can see the short rubber flex hose (with a bolt plugging it) that I substituted for the orginal flex line, the orginal screw-on flex line was about 1 1/2" too short, so I installed a hose barb on the suction side.This makes changing the lines much easier when I'm broke down by the side of the road....
   Today I installed an elec pump near the tank, on the frame rail.The rubber line is then connected to the suction side ofthe mech pump.Thinking is that the cam operated pump will pull fuel thru the elec pump, if the mech pump won't pump I switch on the elec and the mech pump will act as a pressure regulater.
  This seems to work in the shop........on the road may be another thing.Raining to hard for a test flight.
  Really would like to take the jeep camping in Brown's Park this weekend.It went last year and was a big hit, of course that was the last gasp for the engine, current rebuild being the result.But Brown's Park really is past the middle of nowhere,bad place to break down. Not a lot of confidence in the jeep right now.

Hey Larry,

I think these photos may be showing his temporary fall back approach.  A prior post mentions the 5/16" fuel line from the tank drain to get him down the road when he has issues.  Looks like there is a steel line connected to the tank in the right position, but I can't see how long or how far the steel line travels before it reaches the engine compartment.  

So...Saw,
As Larry points out, the original set up is steel from the front hole in the tank until it is within about 6" from the pump.  It then has a short rubber connection to the pump.  It was done this way to give the line some flexibility between the engine movement and the more rigid chassis and fuel line connections. It reduces the chance of a fuel line break.

So, on your standard original setup, if you have a long rubber line attached to a short steel line, Larry's thoughts are true.  (By the way, Larry's thoughts are always true.)  Upon heating up, the rubber could compress under pressure from the pump.  Similar to what happens on an older lower radiator hose that causes overheating.

Ther routing of the line from the pump to the carb looks good.  Good and far away from the manifold heat.

I read in another post that if the cam shaft has movement, the arm on the pump can slip off the lobe and cause the pump to stop pumping.  Could this be a factor?

Upon seeing this pic, the first thing I would advise is to install a correct metal line all the way up to the fuel pump, with a correct short flexible connection. It's never a good idea to use soft line on the input (suction) side of a pump. A long rubber hose like that has a tendency to suck closed, especially after heating up from the engine.

Sorry about the lack of specific answers, info or pics, my current level of frustration with the 50 is spilling over into my computer use......
 1.) Drilled a hole in a fuel cap, stuck a 1" chunk of brake line thru it, instant OSHA approved, vented for sure gas cap.This was installed before the last test flight.Did not seem to make a diff.
2) Have not hooked up the elec. fuel pump yet ( the backup line from the drain seemed to work on test flight #1, but not yesterday on test flight #2) plan to install elec pump in backup line and try.Bit worryed about too much presure for Solex carb,not sure if I'll need a presure reg.
3.) Will get pics up sooner or later.
4.) Thanks for the encouragement.
5.) Athawk11, I'll be the Dead Red 50 Willys by the side of the road.

It sounds to me like a vented cap problem but we're not getting specific answers, info or pics so it's difficult to judge.

A friend has a CJ-2A that I drive from time to time. �He has an electric fuel pump installed in the fuel line just down stream from the fuel tank. �That Jeep acts strange. �It will drive for 30 minutes to an hour with the elec fuel pump off without hesitating, up hills as well. �Then it will sputter, cough, and die. �It will not start unless you turn on the elec fuel pump. �Turn on the pump it starts instantly. �The owner just drives with the in-line fuel pump always on. �It never dies. �Sounds like that may be a solution.  I don't know what the answer is.

Posting pictures is a bit of a challenge...but nothing like the challenge you are facing with your Willys.

The easiest way to post is to us a secondary photo site like www.Photobucket.com

It is free...you can easily download your photos there...then from there, you can move them into your post.  There are some posts on how to do this, but some still seem to have trouble.  Could be an Internet Explorer or Firefox thing.

Look in the Web Site Feedback area for help.

Did take some pics on Sunday , but can't seem to post them.
Sundays test flight ended in failure, dead jeep by the side of the road.
A bit of a bus ride, a walk and then towed Little Red home.

I agree with Larry(Rocketeer)  Pictures say a thousand words. �You would be surprised what the members here might see that may help solve your issue.

Besides, you live in Colorado. �I live in Colorado (Arvada). �If I ever see your Willys on a drive, I'll know who I'm chasing down.
