Good tips on the vinegar flush, I'll have to do that when I get mine going.

Put the vinegar in and run it a while and then let it soak for a few days. Then run it and try to get it near 200 deg to help it work. You may have to run it for several hours and it won't hurt to leave it in a week or two but NOT in cold weather we have coming now.

Nice job Carl, I wondered what White vinegar would do in a Rad, I've used it for a lot of calcium issues, but never in a Rad.  I've got a Farmall B narrow that is boiling over, I'm thinking a vinegar bath is just what it needs!!!

After the trip to Blanding Ut I noticed the Jeep started overheating at times. I tried a chemical flush and all it did was make the water pump leak. Looking in the radiator I could see lots of deposits at the top of the cores. Probably from Bars stop leak and years of calcium deposits.

I removed the rad. and had it boiled out and I ordered a water pump rebuild kit. Having rebuilt many water pumps I was curious about doing this one. Most water pumps use a ceramic seal pressed into a bore running against the impeller. When I tore it down I found that is not what Willys did. They use a fiber washer running against the cast iron housing. Well, the surface on my housing was well worn and rounded as seen in the photo below.



It had to be machined and I don't have the surfacing tool in the manual. I machined a mandrel to slip fit into the bearing bore and used bearing retainer locktite to hold it. That way I could leave the mandrel in the lathe and mount the housing on it. Then I used a V nose cutter to machine the surface to the required finish and flatness as shown below.



Then I assembled the parts as instructed in the Willys manual being careful to get the four ears on the fiber washer in line with the four slots in the impeller. The assembled WP and old parts are shown below.



I put the WP and radiator back in and filled the system with 2 gallons of white vinegar. The white vinegar is better at dissolving calcium deposits, rust and other things. I did that to be sure the system is actually clean. I took it for a 60 mile run and noticed it still got up to about 200 deg F at times so I was beginning to get suspicious of the thermostat. When I got home I drained the system and it was red with rust and probably had a lot of calcium and other stuff in it. It took five flushings and two 1 mile drives to get the water clear. At that point I drained it and replaced the thermostat with another 160 deg F thermostat and filled the system with antifreeze for -25 deg F.

Another road trip showed no tendency to get above 160 deg so I parked her for the night.

EDIT: I forgot to say that I let the vinegar soak for a few days and then did the 60 mile run.�
