I had a problem with an old Farmall engine, it leaked anti freeze past the orings on the piston sleeves, like real bad, I replaced the orings and put in 6 quarts of trnamission fluid and started it up and ran it for about 20 minutes. The tranny fluid is real light but high lubricuty so it got into the lifters and drove out the anti freeze. Don't work them when you do this kind of stuff. But at idle its ok for a while, it will clean them out, and the high levels of detergent in tranny oil will remove deposits. Like Carl says though, get rid of the sludge first, you don't want that floating around in the motor.
