Sure is. There are several theories about the origin of the Ural sidecar motorcycles. Some say the Russian reverse engineered the popular German BMW before the war (1939), some say the Germans sold them their outdated tooling. �In either case, they have BMW style boxer engines and similar frames. �To the untrained eye, they look indentical. �The russians have made minimal changes in the rigs since 1939, which add to their character.

Bob,

When you look it square from the side you can see the body doesn't quite fit right over the wheels but it's acceptable.  I'll know more about the mounting techniques as I remove the body to make it more solid.

Oh, I knew they made motorcycle tires, they are actually quite popular as cheapie replacements for my other hobby; 2WD Russian sidecar motorcycles. I just didn't know they made an NDT type tire.

Sounds like it is a CJ-3A frame then. The wheelbase of an early CJ-5 is one inch longer than a CJ-3A so they must have made some sort of modification to make the body fit so well.

Bob, the front crossmember is round, arched higher in the center than at the frame rails and under the Grill/radiator area.

I kind of like that front bumper. It says GET OUT OF MY WAY, NOW! and means it. Yes, it looks like an everyday driver to me. Just knock out the dents and paint it and drive it.

Thanks for the lively remarks about the old bomb. �I hope to "frame off" clean (it is a project after all) and make dependable but no plans for a serious restoration. May get a new 3a body for it, I do love the flat fender look, but I plan to hone my sheet metal skills with this one for now.

Larry, those are Warn locking hubs...have no idea of the origin but they are there for sure.

Weedhopper, It is a tank fill on the right side and there is one on the left too, it has 2 tanks. One under each seat.

Mr. Pie, The bumper is going for sure, I'm thinking of a tasteful, simple tube brush guard to match the one that will be on the rear. There is nothing on the back now.

As to how ol' Bill put the 5 body on a 3a frame...I'll have to ask him when I see him. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a cj5 frame too. That is to be determined. �Bob W needs to know if it has a round or square cross front cross member on the front of the frame to solve this very quandry.

What ever it is, we'll show it all the love the lil mixed-up morph deserves. �Who knows, maybe all it really wants is that coat of flat black paint and to be run!!! �:)

Wow!  I think Frankenjeep is a very acurate description.  ;D  While it might be challenging to bring it back to original, I bet it would be a blast to drive it as is!  Throw on some flat black paint and make it into a rat rod!  ;)

What kind of locking hubs are on there?  Kinda looks like Selectro but the center appears recessed in the pic.
