For removing stuck bolts, I find that alternate applications of heat, penetrating oil, and light application with an pnuematic impact wrench works much better at freeing stuck bolts than a big A@@ wrench.   Give me a big wrench, and I can snap almost any bolt you put in front of me!!!!

I hand feed each bolt, nut, fitting before I lay a wrench on it. Before I remove anything, I give it an overnight soak in Marvel Mystery Oil and say a short prayer to the Jeep Gods... so far no snapped bolts.

You do have to be careful on these blocks and know when you are dealing with a standard US fine or course thread or a pipe thread.  If the fitting does not thread the first time, I usually clean the threads with a brush and gently try one more time.  If it still does not thread by hand, then I begin to presume that the thread is different than that of my fitting.

Pure laziness. �On a motorcycle board I frequent, to attach a pic, you click "attach", browse your hard drive, click on the pic, done. With Photobucket, et al, you have to upload the pic from your hard drive to their site, then go to this site, copy/paste the url from their site to this site and hope all is well. �Now my photo is posted in 2 places to show up in 1. �1980's technology at best.

You'll probably find all kinds of variations on a vehicle that's 50 plus years old. All kinds of things gets changed.

There are several photo sites besides Photobucket to use but why don't you like to use Photobucket? It's easy to use and free.

Well I can certainly see I'll be asking a ton of stupid questions.... before the internet, I suffered alone in my garage with my stupidity, now I get to share it with others....  ::)

I tried putting the line directly into the timing cover, no-go, ain't happening, the line fitting is too large.  I grab a flashlight and peer into the fitting; yep, like it was said above, the fitting is flaired, no additional fittings needed.....  But the line still won't fit.

I take the 45 degree off the bottom of the filter, take the line off the 45, lo and behold, each end of the line are two different sizes !!  I put the "filter" side of the line into the timing cover...it fits.

The 45 (that I assumed was OEM) has the smaller fitting.  Looks like I need a new 45. I wonder what other surprises I'll find from the previous owner....

And without all my couplings/fittings, the line fits pretty good now.

And to think I only spent 2 Saturdays driving around to different parts houses trying to find the fitting that I thought I needed, but didn't.

Thanks again, guys !!

Kind of scary what I'll come up with next.

I was going to insert a pic (plus, I think the oil line I got from Walcks is about 2" too long.) but I can't insert a pic. �If this site is one of the kind that you have to go to photobucket/open an account/etc. I'll never be posting pics.... �:-?

I'm heading down the the garage right now to take a gander at the fitting. �It was always a rule of thumb that you used a fitting on a line. �Maybe my thumb is wrong... � ;)

The previous owner had put a barbed fitting from the cover, a barbed fitting from the filter and ran a section of line between the two. �I'm trying to do it right by using the proper lines.

If no fitting is needed and I'm being a doofus, I owe someone a beer !!

Yep, it's a flare fitting on the hose and the fitting in the cover. The pressure line has flare fitting as well, at least that is what mine are.

Doesn't the rubber line connect directly to the timing cover without any adapter? I think it's a flare fitting so pipe thread won't fit properly.

I went and looked at my Jeep and it looks like the fitting is a straight 1/8" pipe thread to a #4 female flare fitting. There is a fitting that looks to be brazed or fixed in some way to the front cover that the fitting screws into.

Yours may not be the same as mine but mine is original as far as I can tell.

As to the fitting going in to far, I suspect someone has screwed yours in to far thinking tighter is better when in fact it's not always the case.

You can use some liquid pipe dope to seal it. The liquid Teflon or tape Teflon seldom works on threads that have been stressed like yours. There should be very little pressure on the return line so it should seal ok.

I recently replaced the oil lines to my oil filter, and decided to replace all brass fittings, also.  I'm having a * of a time trying to find the right fitting to for outlet line to the timing cover. It appeared to be a standard 1/4x1/8.  I bought two locally, and when I thread it into the cover, it almost goes all the way in, then the brass fitting strips.  I have an original 90 degree (wrong angle, I know, but I had one), and it seats all the way with no problems.

I decided to go online and bought 2 from Jungle Jim, figuring maybe they were some super-secret thread pitch or something that my local auto parts place doesn't have.

I got my package from Jungle Jim today, put it in this evening; you guessed it, stripped out.  Put the original 90 back in, seats with no problems.  Compare threads, look identical.

I know I'm not over tightening the new ones, as it never even gets to the too-tight stage.

So, learned fellows, what is going on ?
