Yea, Carl is right.  Save your old parts, they may be better than the replaced parts.  Just ask Calvin to tell you the mess he went through a year or two ago with his transmission.  Fortunatly for me, the guys on this site warned me before I started my project, and I was grateful to them all.

I will suggest leaving it 12v and replacing the wiring as needed. You don't have to buy a wire loom, just replace the wires as needed. The wiring on a Jeep is very simple and the wiring diagram in the manual will help a lot. Remember, it's not a Corvette, it's a Jeep. They are simple so keep it simple.

The starter is 6v but works fine on 12v if you don't hold the starter on for long periods of time. If it don't start in 15 seconds let it rest and find out why it didn't fire off. It needs spark, gas and compression to start and if one is missing it won't start.

If your going to use one of them as a daily driver or as something to knock around in DON'T restore it, just repair as needed. A totally restored Jeep becomes a Garage Queen and is seldom driven.

Save any good parts you replace, they may be better than the reproduction parts you buy. Only buy from a reputable dealer and try to stay away from buying parts on ebay unless you can trust the seller. If you have questions ask here, someone can help you.

Get the reprint copy of the original Willys shop manual and read it.

I suspect the shifter fork rails are rusty or frozen from sitting. Remove the floor cover and pull the shift tower and have a look see. It's not that hard to do. You don't need a new gasket, you can use RTV on the cover in place of a gasket. Just don't put a lot on, a little dab'l do ya, just like Brylcream.

Very cool, you have the 1247th CJ-3A!!!

I suspect there may be water in your transmission. Was it parked out in the weather with no top? If so rain water can run down the shifter and get in the transmission. Pull the drain plug to check it.

I found this website yesterday.  Tons of good info on there.  I think I am going to order the parts list as well as the service manual.  The '49 has been converted to 12v with an alternator,  but the wiring is pretty buggered up.  I have the original generator and wondering if I should go back to 6V system?

Also when pulling the jeep out I notice the gear selector lever was sort of frozen.  It had some play in it but could not be put into the gears?  It ran and drove fine besides the engine knock when it was parked sometime ago.  Could this just be some corrioded linkgage that needs to be lubricated or would you suspect something internal to the trans?

Welcome to the site and it sounds like a plan to me. You have a good deal there, one Jeep to get running and mechanically sound for a fun driver and the other to restore to show room condition if you want to.

Hey Fellas,

Just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for a great forum of information. �About 15 years ago my dad bought two old jeeps and parked them in the barn. �One was running at the time but had a bad knock. �Both jeeps are complete though. �While I was up north deer hunting I pulled there serial numbers. �

CJ-3A 11247
CJ-3A Body 11348

From what I can tell by the limited research I have done this is a early 1949. �This is the one that was running with the knock in the engine. �I ended up pulling the motor and plan on going through it and rebuilding it. �Where can i find a good manual and parts for this?

I plan on tackling the 1949 first and getting it back in working condition, �from there I will see if an addiction has grown and decide if plans need to be made for the 46. �I look forward to all the knowledge and answer i will find from this forum.
