Military shafts had a cap that screwed on, civi had bend tabs. There is a cork sealing gasket under the cap. If you look close, some shafts had opposing arrows to locate them back together. Whatever you do, make sure the ears of the shaft itself are in the same orientation. "Clocked". I had one that was 90 degrees clocked. It buzzed and vibrated the entire Jeep. Bad deal. Easy to overlook when the ujoints were the same. Cost me alot to figure that one out. Oilly

It's been a while since I've taken one apart, but I vaguely remember having to bends the tabs back on the opposite side (away from the splines) of the sleeve.

I am cleaning up the two drive shafts now, have removed the four universal joints and got most of the 50 year old dirt off. However, the spline will not slide out of the sleeve. I can see dirt caked under the sleeve cap, so I would like to separate both shafts, but neither one will come apart. They do slide about 3/4 of an inch, but that's all. Is there a secret to getting them apart, or do I just need more oomph?
