[size=12]Hey Mudviper. Just saw this post. The tube your curious about is a vent. In later designs it was determined that the necessary venting action could be accomplished without it. As far as deleting the insulator goes, it is necessary for precisely the reason it is called an insulator. It and the two gaskets keep the heat in the bowl/main body section so the fuel in the bowl, when called for, is of a proper temperature to atomize correctly in the airstream going to the cylinders. Proper fuel temperature is also why there is a heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold. To quickly bring the fuel in the bowl up to a proper temperature. However, if stuck open, that heat will cause the fuel in the bowl to boil and flood the carburetor much as you have described.[/size][/b]

I wouldn't be confident enough to leave the spacer out of the equation. There is a lip on the bowl portion of the Carter. Without the spacer, I'm not sure if the gaskets would be enough to tighten it to the throttle body, though I have never tried it that way.
Thanks Athawk... Before rebuilding the carb it was pouring gas out of the outside and inside of it, so thought that might have been the reason why. What about the throttle body spacer? Is that needed or am I ok with just using a the double gasket?
I had the same question a few years ago, but couldn't find the thread. I think it may have been on the old 3A forum, which is long gone. I freaked out enough to add a small piece of tubing in this location, only to find I wasted my time.
You're good. There are slight differences on the bowl portion of these things. I've rebuilt several Carter WOs at this point, and only one has the short tube shown in the above photo.
