The piece is L-shaped.

1-1/2" wide. The portion attached to the grill is 1" tall.

The portion that stands off the grill is 1-3/8" from the inner face of the grill...out.

The hole is 1/2" diameter.

Here is a photo of the brush guard.  I can't say for certain whether this was a standard feature or an accessory.  They are prone to rust, so they may be a piece that doesn't get put back on if the Willys is restored.  I had to have it.  Took me a while to find a replacement for my original.  It was too far gone to fix...

Thanks guys for the quick responses. I found a picture as a reference to show the small bracket from the grill to the cross-member. I am guessing that why there a flat spot there for it to weld to.Can anyone help me with some measurements since I will have to make one?

Athawk11, was the brush guard/deflector a option back in the day or did most just get lost over the years? And thanks for the wiring question, I got a jeep with barely any wiring to know how to even know where to start placing it.


JeepFever, I would love to see a picute of the brush guard/deflector even if its rusted, its cool just to even see. I hope you get some time to work on your project as well.

Anyone know where I can find some of the grill nuts or retainers? If not i'll just have to make them.

That may have been my problem.  The Walcks harness (Set up for turn signals) had the headlight and park light wires contained in one large loom.  I attempted to fit it all down low, but it wouldn't reach the headlight.

The right headlight loom goes on the top and the right parking light loom goes on the bottom.

Which brings me to a question I know you can answer.  During dis-assembly of the grill on the OD Willys, I found an old portion of the original wire harness loom down there.  I had also seen examples of the harness up above the grill deflector area too.  For ease, I installed on top.  Is there a correct placement?

Not to hijack the thread too much,  but this reminds me that I would REALLY like to find some time to work on Hoover.   "Life" has gotten in the way (good stuff,  not bad)
Hopefully I can get back on the Willys track soon. :)

I am sure you will get a more knowledgeable answer in this forum,� but I can help a little by looking at my '51� (dented and rusted, but mostly unmolested)

- mine does not have the 3 holes at bottom-front or the 4 holes on bottom of grill.
- mine has 3 encapsulated nuts per side. (yours appears to be missing the ones at the top)

edit:� athawk is going to force me to go out in rain and look again.� I did not see any holes on the bottom in the first quick look.� (to clarify, athawk did not force me,� my curiosity did� :) )

edit2:� as I was certain - >� athawk was correct� :),� there are 4 holes on bottom of grille on mine (but filled with bolts),� they are holding a shield that would keep stuff from getting sucked up between the grille and crossmember -> into radiator.� . .� �if you would like photos of my rusty one,� let me know.

Nice photos!

There should be 3 caged nuts on each side.

The 4 holes along the bottom edge are original and are there to attach the grill to the brush guard/deflector that sits on top of the tube shaped cross member...if your Willys is so equipped.


The 3 holes on the lower front don't belong.  The center hole sits roughly where an L- shaped bracket was spot welded to the inside face of the grill.  This bracket is used to attach the grill to the "shelf" on the front side of the tubular cross member.

Hey there guys/gals. I finally have started to start my rebuild of my jeep. Started to strip the paint off the grill, and found a few holes that I am not sure on. I got three hole and a raised area on the middle hole on the bottom of the hole. From what I see of restore they are not a thing. Is there suppose to be so many holes on the bottom of the grill for something? And last but not least how many nut /welded nut retainers are there suppose to be per side to mount the fender? Thanks for any help. Also found out that sand blasters are the bomb to remove the paint on these.
