One should not assume the shaft isn't worn.

I was hoping someone with a flat head would jump in on this.  I've read a bunch of posts about it and it seems to be a task.  Here are a few of those posts:

The soot you describe was perhaps displayed in one of the posts above.  It doesn't sound like a weekend job to me.

Here's the kit from AJP mentioned above.  I can see what looks like bushings.

It would be nice to be able to source just the bushings if everything else works well.

Engine compartment / How loose is too loose for exhaust flapper
« Last post by squidtone on July 17, 2026, 05:07:53 PM »
Hi there,
My engine has developed a noisy "TAP" RAP type of sound, an obvious exhaust leak at the manifold area. I checked the usual suspects, and eventually I could feel a blast of exhaust leaking by the gasket where the exhaust and intake manifold are bolted together. I figured I had to replace the gasket. I took the works off, but found no leak, but saw to my dismay that there is jet black soot coming out of the shaft where it pierces the casting and holds the flapper. It's pretty loose. I can shift it side to side maybe 0.025". Still, I have a hard time believing it could make that kind of racket.
The wear is in the shaft seemingly. Not so much the casting (or what appears to be some kind of bushing perhaps)

I guess it's too loose and worn, but would you agree it would allow that kind of noise to escape?
Ugh. I don't think it looks to easy to replace that shaft.

On the home stretch now, just a little more to do and the tub will be finished with metal work.
Addressing some rust in the fender and riser area.

Thanks, Pascal.  As far as I can see, all posts are now visible to me also.  That's a big problem solved by the move to the new host.

Got some of the rear floor repairs done. I've come to the conclusion it would have been better to completely remove the floor, make the repairs and then reinstall it. The rust was worse than I initially thought it was and the patch was bigger than expected, so ran into some shrinking issues. But its getting there and hopefully is the last of the tub work.

That's excellent news!

It looks like the change fixed the issue for your account. Since this problem has only affected a small number of members over the years, I'm not ready to declare victory just yet, but this is a very encouraging result.

The next step is to see if the same fix works for the other members who have reported the problem in the past. If it does, we may have finally tracked down a bug that's been around for years.

Thank you very much for taking the time to test not only the thread I mentioned, but also all the older posts where you previously had to use the copy/paste workaround. That was extremely helpful.

The grease seems easy enough.  If you notice any hopping on your speedometer needle after trimming, it's possible it may be a bit too short.

The hope is this fixes all the cable stuff so you can focus on the next issue.
